WhenI tried to run my disk defragment it said I had a disk error and to run scandisk. The problem though is that when scandisk is close to finishing the computer locks up so I can't fix the error on the hard drive anyway. It seems to be affecting scandisk. How can I fix this. ( I've already restarted the computer a number of times and re run scandisk but the same thing keeps happening)

you need to run scandisk from safe mode (or dos) to prevent it from being interrupted. restart and keep tapping F8 as your machine starts up then choose safe mode from the list. you will probably not be able to use your cdd, network hardware or usb devices while in this mode. hope it's not too serious...

If that to doesn't work, you can try booting with a bootdisk and then run scandisk. If it still locks up, I would format the harddrive and if I still have the same problem, you can try deleting and recreating the partitions... just a few things I should do, but you'll need to backup. Johan

Windows Millinium often times isn't able to run scandisk-- this is a known issue with Microsoft, download directX8.0a Upgrade from the Microsoft Upgrade site, that should make you able to run scandisk. Yes, it sounds odd, but it works.
