Scandisk opens everytime I restart my computer. Is there any help, or is this just another windows problem one must live with.
I'm just a novice in a new age.

It's running because the OS terminated abnormally. When you shut down the computer, are you closing all open programs and then doing a shutdown or restart?

Therein lies your problem. Just close any open Programs...NOT Tasks.... If you close all the tasks, then Windows will not shut down properly and will then do a scandisk when rebooted or restarted.

Have a look at this Microsoft article too
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;273017

Click on the START button/ click RUN / In the text box type MSCONFIG and hit enter. Under the GENERAL tab which it will open to, click on the ADVANCED tab and check the box that says "Disable scandisk after bad shut down". Scandisk however is only supposed to run automatically if Windows detected a premature shutdown (not having been allowed to run through it's full closing sequence).
I should also mention that while disabling Scandisk will probably have your most immediate desired result, it is a bandaid cure. If the solution works, then you can leave it on, but you should know that the principle reason for Scandisk running even after a normal shutdown, is the fact that during the shutdown procedure data is written to the destination drive, most likely your principal hard drive. In some instances, the data is copied to the drive's onboard cache and not to the hard disk itself. If windows shuts down before the drive can transfer the data to the hard disk, all the data in the cache will be lost. You can edit the registry to add a timed delay to the shutdown sequence to allow time for the drive to write the data properly. Try reversing the cure mentioned before to see if the problem returns. If it does, then you need to stall the closing. Post the results.
