SCANDISK PROBLEM

My scandisk keeps starting over and over about every 2 minutes. It will take about 5 hrs. to get it done that way. I've closed all programs except Systray and Explorer but it doesn't help. When I try to go to Safe Mode, the screen comes up but I can't change it from Normal to Safe. Nothing on the keyboard seems to work. Works fine in Windows.
I have a Dell Demension 8100, 256 MB Ram, 32 MB NVIDIA GeForce2 Graphics Card, 40GB Hard Drive, Dell Enhanced Performance USB Keyboard, Windows ME, & Cordless Logitech Mouse.
When I first got it, they had to replace the Motherboard and CPU before it would work. On boot up the first time it said keyboard failure, but the repair guy got it to work and said Windows just needed time to find it.
Would appreciate any help here. Thanks

How old is this machine? If its under 30 days DEMAND another one,not a refurb and not a fix.I am a firm believer in DELL but they do make lemons now and then.Your other option is to reformat(which I RARELY if ever suggest) but if the thing is hosed right down to the start-up routine i.e cannot enter safe mode, then its time to holler real loud or reformat from the ground up.Esp if its brand new,you shouldnt have to screw with it.

The easiest way to run scandisk is using a bootdisk and run it from dos. If you go to www.startdisk.com you can download The Ultimate Bootdisk for windows me. It will give you a mouse pointer so you won't have to worry about using the keyboard. With a 40 gig hard drive, it is still going to take between 4 and 5 hours to run a thorough scandisk. It's a very large drive. I hape you realize that it is not normal to have the problems that you have experienced with a new computer. The only problem you should have with a new keyboard is if it's not plugged in. If it was my computer, I would demand that they replace it completely or give me my money back. The longer you stick with a lemon, the harder it's going to be to get the problem fixed. And don't be polite! Make sure they know that you're not happy with their product or their service.

This is crazy for a new system. And the engineer's comment is a joke. Send it back.

When you get it back, all nice and new, have a look at this forum Post number 13240 “Tweaks for Win ME” 1 September 2001. Do those before you do anything else and the system should be a lot healthier for the future. Mail me if you have any problems with any of them or just to say how you got on :]

USB keyboards do not work in Real Mode(MS-DOS) and Safe mode unless they have USB legacy emulation.
It can be enabled in the computer's BIOS settings only if the computer's motherboard supports it. Otherwise, you go buy a keyboard with a PS/2 port, and use that everytime you want to go into Safe mode or MS-DOS. Mine doesn't support USB legacy emulation so I'll get another keyboard to go into Safe mode and run Scan Disk.

Thanks for the help fellows. It's beyond 30 days for return but I will reconsider buying a Dell next time.

if DELL is not able to make your computer fully functional, document well your problem and write certified letters return receit requested to Federal Trade Commision, to your state Attorney General Office, to Better Business Bureau and send "carbon copies" to DELL... if your problems started right after the computer was delivered and still continue then it is a LEMON LAW case.
