Upon every bootup Scandisk begins a through scan but even 6 hours later, it is not finished and even hangs up. I must cancel it to use computer. I tried it in Safe Mode and same thing. I tried defrag and it told me I need a through Diskscan.
Problem began after I tried Norton's Diskscan, so I uninstalled Norton's and restored under WinMe, which is my OS.
That was to no avail.
I do not get any error messages during this Scandisk fiasco!
I have WD 30G ata100 HD and WinMe.
What the Hell is Wrong????
The first time I had this problem was on my old hardrive.
Unfortunately my first drive proved to be damaged and scandisk was not able to physically fix it. After a couple of days I got a boot message warning me that my hard drive was failing and failure may be immenent, back up all data.
To be safe back up just in case.
I have had this problem again with my new drive tried in safemode as well, finally for some unknown reason it worked but took almost 15 hours.
There is a simple program available called "end it all". This software shuts down all background programs which can cause problems when installing or running scandisk
You can get it here
http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/The reason scandisk keeps stopping is because of background activity.
This might work.
Sorry did not read properly, you get it on boot.
Sorry cant help here, all I know is that scandisk runs on boot after improper shutdown.
Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools and click on ScanDisk. Make sure "Standard" and NOT "Thorough" is checked.
Also go to Start/Run type in msconfig, click on startup, and make sure ScanDisk is not scheduled to run at startup.

When you're finished all that good advice, have a look here

at points 2,5,6,7,9 and especially go here for good msconfig and startup information

Use a startup disk to get to a DOS prompt and scandisk/all, then press enter. This shouls allow scandisk to complete without hanging, and once all errors are repaired you should run defrag in safe mode.
I have downloaded DirectX 8.0 and all WinMe updates and I still have same problem. I will try scandisk from floppy next....I will let you know what happens!
Often times, if you have several programs running in your "startup" the scandisk will hang and never finish...you can close these progrmas by looking in the lower right-hand corner of your screen (they will come back when you re-boot next time). After closing, try running scandisk. Hope that helps.

Nothing Worked!@#
I had to Fdisk and Format Drive.
I installed Win98 SE. I think it's a bit more stable than WinMe.
