After i've been working on my pc for a while and then decide to scandisk it starts up, runs for a few seconds and then freezes. I can't get out of the freeze & have to reset my pc, but if I scandisk straight after start up it runs smooth as a baby's b** why does this happen?

I have had this happen intermittently, and it seemed to be related to my power manager settings which were set to put my IDE drives into standby mode after 30 minutes of inactivity on the drive. For some reason the drive does not wake up upon request from Scandisk and you are hung out to dry. After a reboot, all drives are up and running so this scenario does not occur.
You might try turning off the "standby" feature of your hard drives and see what happens. =D
