I have Windows ME and the ScanDisk will not run properly. It stalls, saying that it has attempted to run 10 times, but something else is running. I've attempted to use the SAFEMODE to run the ScanDisk without any luck. I contacted my Computer Support (SONY) and the operator mentioned that some of the problem may be my hardware/printer. I have a HP 895cxi which I had with my previous computer (Windows 95) and he said that it may be a DOS problem. I went out on the HP site and updated, but it still did not take care of the problem.

I feel I may have a virus, as I received a strange message from a friend. It seemed to be a portion of a word document file because the message made no sense. Also, I received an e-mail to myself, with a portion of a word document in it from a file I had created.

I have also received the following messages: Regenv32 has caused an error;
A required .DLL file, AWL FT332.DLL was not found; Windows cannot access the specified path while you may not have the appropriate permission to access the item.

I uninstalled the McAffe Shield, but they want to charge me to re-install. I think it was already on my computer when I purchased it from Best Buy.

What would be the best thing for me to do? I re-contacted Sony and they want to charge me $20 for assistance and they cannot guarantee that the problem(s) would be resolved.

Thank You.

Lesson learned. Format and reinstall your system. Buy norton antivirus install it and keep it running. Might want to give zonealarm a try also.
what to do about sony? how about never buy anything from them again. $20.00 service charge after you spend a grand+ on there system. I would be embarassed to even ask for $20.00.
If your computer came with mcafee installed chances are it exists on your system restore disk somewhere. Keep your virus definitions updated and scan everything.

Here is a site where you can run a free online virus scan.

Many people have had problems running scandisk with Windows Me. The best thing to do is start the computer with a bootdisk and run scandisk in DOS. My favorite is The Ultimate Bootdisk which is available for free download from startdisk.com.
AVG antivirus is a free program that I think is good and is available at grisoft.com. The most important thing with antivirus programs is to keep the virus definitions up-to-date, so you have to make sure to check for new updates several times a week.
Reinstalling Windows to get a fresh start might be a good idea, but you have to maks sure to run a thorough scandisk right after that to make sure there are no unmarked bad sectors on the hard drive that could lead to problems. Another free program I like is System Safe Gold from systemsafe.com. It saves a backup copy of system files so if you ever need to replace a missing DLL, it is easy to replace from the backup. It also runs a check on some important system files at startup and automatically replaces them if it finds any missing or corrupted. I haven't had any DLL errors since I began using it two months ago.

The failure of scandisk to run may not be virus related. View this post - points 2,5,6,7,9 and shut down everything you can think of:

If the problem is still there, reinstall
