I have a dell demision desktop . while trying to turn unit on this message appears "scandskw has caused an error in kerel32dll please restar your computer" after restarting the message reappears and the hourglass sets forever and will do nothing any clues

Are you sure that is the correct error message?
Could it be ScanregW instead of scandskw?
You could try a scanreg /restore through start>run (note the space between scanreg and the slash). End tasks of all running programs before using the command and pick a date before this error started occurring (this is only possible if the error started in the last few days). Otherwise try a system restore to a time before the error began.

Try this:
Restart and go to MS-DOS mode using a startup disk. In minimum boot up Type scandisk /all and press enter. Now your disk should start getting scanned.
When its over type scanreg /fix and press enter. This will scan your registry and fix errors.
Next restart your system by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete
While you are at it do this also: Go to safe mode by pressing Ctrl while before Windows boots up. Defrag the disk on all drives. Restart the system into normal mode.
Hope that makes your system alright now.:-)

Thanks for everyones help ,nothing I did in safe mode would work, just generated a whole host of different error messages. It also would not start off a start up disk. Finally was able to get to dos and do restore to a previous date it is working now but I think it messed up the video driver as the scren colors are different. thanks again.
