Comment:

I'm interested to know why Scandisk runs fine and completes under DOS using my EBD but when I try it in Safe Mode it just keeps restarting. Now why should this be I ask myself, since only Explorer seems to be running in the background in Safe Mode?

Because you haven't loaded Windows when your in DOS.

When you load Windows safe mode your obviously in Windows even though it's Windows with only the specific components needed to make the OS work.

If your getting that problem in safe mode then you'd better find out what's writing to the hard disk drive, preventing you from completing scandisk.

Norton user by any chance ? Scanned for viruses / malware ? Checked the LED light on the front of the box for activity when your in safe mode ? (etc, etc)

Thanks for the response Viking - not using Norton, no Viruses, but will check the LED light and try to track down what's running in background. Can't think for the life of me what it might be tho' and Ctrl/Alt/Del only shows Explorer as I said.

Years ago, I ended up pulling every single program off and started on the drivers, on a home PC I owned for the same reason.

It ended up being, Norton cleansweep and Epson printer driver software.

The only way I got it to stop was by installing the Epson printer driver first before any other software and then it had to be followed by Norton products (if I wanted them on).

If I didn't put Norton on at all, then the Epson driver didn't care and never gave any trouble. But like I said, if I'd have put Norton on first and then installed the printer software -- back to the same ole routine.

I ended up downloading another driver for the printer from the American Epson site and using that instead of the bundled CD software.

That one didn't care what stage I installed it, and didn't care what software it was accompanied with. And I scandisked away in Windows and Windows safe mode thereafter.
