Comment:

I recently just installed Win ME on my computer. Everything works fine, except when I try to run scandisk. I click on scandisk from the menu and as soon as I move my mouse more than an inch toward the box to start scandisk the blue screen of death comes up that says there is an error vwin32(05) + 00000BF4 Error: 0E : 0028 : C02A3DCC if that means anything to anyone. This is very odd because it won't crash until I start to move my mouse. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have the exact same problem complete with the error message ,I think but am not positive that it might be to do with the memory, will try and check that tonight and will report back , let me know if you find anything out

Cheers

Hello, this is a classic problem.
Shutdown all the programs loaded into the memory at the start (except explorer, video,
and winMe drivers). You can see them by Ctrl+Alt+Del, once) or in the right of task bar (systray, don't close !).
After you can run scandisk without problems.

I don't think the "classic" problem is scandisk failing on BDODs.

Hopefully nigel will report back on his findings

btw: all tasks don't show in c-a-d, and systray can be killed with no side affects

Sorry Eh?, but many people (and me since more than a year !)use the method and have perfect scans of any HDD, any time. It is right that we are in France and that a lot of french users of WinME don't know a lot about it.
Only the result is important.

Sounds fine, but I'd be willing to bet that the "solution" you are suggesting is NOT for BSODs. It is for "other" scandisk issues like restarts, hangs, etc

You will also miss all those tasks that do not appear in c-a-d that contribute to restart problems.

Eh? Thanks for adds. That's true. But my purpose is to help people who don't know (and don't want or cannot know) the details of Windows background tasks.
I have an interesting utility 'WINSONAR 2002' which gives everything of these tasks and their threads to the *.exe. Do you know ?

But if it is true, as you indicate, it is of no help to this person with the BSOD. He can kill tasks to the cows come home, and he will still be getting the BSOD.

Can I throw in a little advice here....try powerdefrag, a shareware program that runs circles around scandisk, and will work when scandisk wont. Such as when backweb is interfering with scandisk or defrag. It can be found on the web at powerdefrag.com ( i think).

Hope this is good advice.

See this thread
http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/29414.html

PowerDefrag ONLY runs the existing Defrag and Scandisk programs that exist on the PC. The thread shows a way to do this without having to install another piece of software.

Well I run the tool for the sircam virus and its all clear, I have also taken the memory out the graphics card out and reseated them but it still crashes, oh if I boot into safe mode then scandisk works fine but then when I boot normally the scandisk will crash along with my games, looks like the memory's fine then must be a driver issue of something like that

Ugrade to Windows 2000 or XP. Me is s---ty piece of OS and it hangs all year round. It is such a sensitive OS. Any apps tat u run will hang the whole OS. Do u realise Microsoft did not do much to promote Me. Now u noe why. They just need a OS for the transition period for 98 users to migrate to 2000. and since they wanted to make 2000 a 'perfect', little attention was paid to Me. I upgraded to XP, and i am a happy guy now : >.
