My computer recently ran low on disk space so I dumped about 2 gig's of files. I like to run scandisk and defrag regularly but now it seems to be stuck in this continuous loop. A message will pop up saying they have restarted 10 times. "Do you want to continue receiving this message? YES or NO" I said NO but then it just does nothing for hours. I tried to boot up in the safe mode but it will not do that either. I'm open for suggestions. Thanks

Have a look at this post, points 2,5,6,7,9, especially 9. Make sure you visit Pac's and uncheck lots of things in msconfig to sort the interruption problem.

You can also try running scandisk in Dos as described here

If you don't know how to create a bootdisk or startup disk:
1. Open Add/Remove Programs properties in Control Panel.
2. Click the Startup Disk tab, and then click Create Disk.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
You can also use a freeware program called End it All which you get here

Hi! Mark!
Run Defrag an Scan Disk in the Safe Mode.I ALWAYS Defrag in the Safe Mode and if need to,run Scan D. there to.You didn't say if you did.Just a thought.-----------Donald

"I tried to boot up in the safe mode but it will not do that either"
Do you mean that your computer will not boot into safe mode... or that scandisk will not run in safe mode?
If you cannot boot into safe mode, try this:
Go to start>>run>>msconfig.
Click on the Advanced Button.
Put a check in Enable Startup Menu.
Click ok>>apply>>ok.
Reboot when prompted and choose #3 for safe mode.To not see the Startup menu anymore, undo the changes via msconfig.
If you still cannot get into safe mode... Did you install the "Millenium DOS tweak"? If you did, one of the side effects of this "tweak" is that you can no longer get into safe mode. Try scandisk from a bootdisk as suggested, but you most likely will never be able to Defrag your box as it also runs scandisk at the beginning.
If you meant that you cannot run scandisk in safe mode, try running it from a bootdisk, then try running Defrag from safe mode.
If something is still writing to your drive in safe mode, there is a distinct possibility that you have a virus. Have you scanned lately?

Hi Mark,
I had the same 'loop' problem on mine too, as suggested by Trev, I downloaded the 'End it All' utility to remove all unneeded running progs in the background, I now Defrag in a about 10/15 mins with no problems. Hope this helps.

Having same problem, won't scan or defrag.
I scanned from dos mode and it seems there are no probs. I had this computer christmas it's windows 98se.I get the same message as everyone else above, as I'm new to this I'm a bit worried about downloading the 'End Utility' and I really don't know how to scan in safe mode, unless that is dos??? Someone please help.
