scandisc/desktop icon problems

Despite using ctrl/alt/delete, my computer won't run scandisc (restarting 10 times etc.) or defrag (0% after 8 hours). I ran scandisc in safe mode, and it showed no errors, but when I restarted my computer, I only have one desktop icon left - "my network places" which so happens to be one I don't think I have ever used anyway! Active desktop shows that "show desktop icons" is already checked. What has happened here, and is it important. Do I simply find what I need and copy and paste them back to desktop, or should I do a system restore to before the scandisc took place? AVG, Adaware and Spybot all show no problems. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks xx

if it were me I would restore back to before the desktop icons disappeared then run msconfig and temporarily disable all startup items then try the defrag. if defrag keeps restarting it is because a background task keeps attempting to write to the harddisk. by using msconfig you can re-enable the startup tasks one at a time until you find the one that keeps writing to the disk.
