Subject: Scan disk!!!! |
Comment: Hey,. When i run scandisk, it works until it gets to about 139,000,000 or about out of 400,000,000. and then it starts over again until a msg box says that it has tried ten times and will now give up or something. I have tried putting it in selective starup mode with no boxes ticked and yest it still does this. Any ideas on how I can get it to do a complete disk scan? Thanks, James.

Reply: (edit)From dos! Make a startup disk. Control panel add/remove programs startup disk tab. Put it in, reboot. Get into dos and type C:\scandisk/all Or is it scandisk\all? Oh well try them both and see what works! Jeff_#

Reply: (edit)If you run it in dos using a bootdisk, at the dos prompt type scandisk/all/autofix/nosave/surface then hit enter This way it will automatically fix errors without asking permission for each one it finds. Sometimes scandisk also restarts constantly in safemode on Windows Me computers, possibly system restore writing in the background. If the dos scan does find any errors, it will ask if you want to make an undo floppy before it makes changes to the hard drive. Just answer no and the scan should complete unattended.

Reply: (edit)Something is definitely accessing the disk while it's scanning. Disable all forms of power management, all scheduled tasks in the scheduled tasks folder, use msconfig - startup to disable pchealth, scheduling agent and any other startup programs that mention scheduling or don't look essential. Disable all utility programs like Norton, etc and any anti-virus software.

Reply: (edit)press ctrlaltdel and list here everything you see running.... also look into your start, programs, startup folder.... what are your resources after rebooting... if everything turned off in msconfig, they should be 98%... if anything less than something is still running Regards

Reply: (edit)I get the same problem with SCAN disk and I can't defrag my C drive. I had to use Diskeeper from http://www.execsoft.com/execsoft.asp in order to defrag my c drive.
