Comment:

I have owned my Hp for 2 months now and have trouble running scan disk....It keeps restating and going through the motions with a new message I have just discovered..It says "Identifying unrepairable sectors"
What's that?
Then after hours of finally getting the scan disk to complete...I defrag..it will restart also stating that the drive contents have changed?
Any suggestions??
Thanks!

Pam, get all your data from your HD to some safe place (burn them on a CD if you can) and contact HP for a HD replacement

Keep running disk defrag, you might have some bad clusters in you hard drive(means you might need a new one). I would also restore it to some point where the problem was not occuring to make sure its not a software issue, but when in doubt, if it is still under warranty, send it back.

Also, does your computer run, and run at the speed its suppose to? If it does, I wouldn't worry about it or just contact whomever it is under warranty with.

I don't know about the first problem but I do know that the second problem is because you probably have other processes running in the background while you are defraging. One way to prevent that from happening is to go into *msconfig* and un-check everything that is not needed and then reboot and run defrag. When you are finished defraging, don't forget to re-check everything back to the way it was before. There are better ways of doing this but this is what I know.

Hi PAM.

Had the same problems.

Therefore may be best to restore the mashine to the best date you know.

Like this:

Go in
Start /Programms / Accessories / MS DOS Promt

type in MS DOS

please exactly this steps and enter

1. scanreg/fix

( it does registry fixing

2. scanreg/opt

( it does cleaning/deleting

3. scanreg/restore

click that date you know the PC works OK.

Shut down / Reboot.

If this wan't help you may have to make
the 'hard way ' c:\formatting in DOS or Search -means the mashine MUST be totally free ( and all is gone = all software you got ! )

And after this:

Reinstall cpl. the Operation Sytem named OS ( 98 or 98SE or ME etc)

I think this will work - but -don't forget
PAM - the mashine MUST be really free of all-software an bad files - all must be done = near 100% formatted.

( one of the best formatting-utility is the volkow CD/ diskette - I use, it makes the mashine really near 100 % free - or the Norton Ghost- thats OK too. )

Good luck.

Defrag sucks, if for no other rason than it takes so long. However, most compaints I've seen have been about defrag restarting over and over, because the swap file is "dynamic." If you set your swap file to a FIXED size, (equal to somewhere between one and two times the size of your memory) you should never have a problem. I have 256K ram and a 256K swap file, and I've never had a problem. But I use Norton's speed disk. Ideally, the (fixed) swap file should be at the beginning of the hard drive. You can download Norton's (or MacAfee's) utilities for a free demo, and after using their defragmenter once, you're all set.

Then you can go back to usiong defrag if you like.
