"SCAN DISK" will progress to 6-bars, then return to the beginning. It will-NOT proceed beyond this! Also, "DISC DEFRAG." will only proceed to 1-bar, then it, also, returns to "0". I MAY... have deleted the files that held these-two apps. Norton 2003 indicated that files were infected - & I deleted them, thinking that if in "Quar.", deleting would not create a problem. Any possibility of getting these-2 working??? How... would I do this? Anyhow, WHAT SHOULD I DO????? Any ass't. appreciated, for-sure! DAVE (P.S.) I have the original "ME" O-S disk.

You need to do these in safe mode . Anything going on in your that writes to the harddrive will cause the scan or defrag to start over.

Do you disable your anti virus app during attempting this process ,some will block the access to the H.D. ,also any third party utilities would or could also prevent scandisk from proceeeding ? Just a thought.
Good Luck Nick

It's not the quarantined files you deleted.
Have a look at this post, points 2,4,8,9,10. Make sure you visit Pac's and uncheck lots of things in msconfig to sort the interruption problem.

You can also use a program called End it All which you get here

http://www.computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/20291.htmlThe above methods, especially the first link, should solve the problem permanently. However, on some PCs there may be a particularly well hidden program causing a problem. In that case, you can also try running scandisk in Dos as described here

(If you don't know how to create a bootdisk or startup disk:
1. Open Add/Remove Programs properties in Control Panel.
2. Click the Startup Disk tab, and then click Create Disk.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen. )
Or, you can follow the Microsoft advice on how to clean boot before using scandisk or defragmenterhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q186978
