I'm trying to fix a friends computer and Me is totally trashed, won't boot at all.

I've slaved the hard drive and managed to copy pictures, document, etc. but cannot seem to find where their email, and address book are.

Any ideas anyone?

Also they still have their win Me disk but lost the case with product key. any ideas on how to recover the product key when the hard drive is slaved in another computer ?

Thanks

Chad

Depends a lot on the email client.

In my case:

xcopy x:\apps\peg y:\pegbak\ /s/h/e

Good luck on the CD key.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

ludedude25:

Do a search for files on the slave drive.
*.wab will be their address book.
*.dbx will be the email folders.
system.dat will have the product key in it. When you find system.dat hold down the shift key and right click on it. Choose 'open with'
and then Wordpad. Most of this file will be unreadable but you can use Edit>find and type in "ProductKey" as one word and without the quotes. When it finds it the 25 numbers after that word will be the key. On the line just above that will be ProductID and then another series of numbers. I'm not sure that you will need them both but it doesn't hurt to copy them down anyway.

I already have that program. One thing tho, it don't work in command prompt. It works great in windows tho.

I found all the wab & dbx files got them coppied, got all their bookmarks aka favorites and most of their pics and stuff from their documents.

They just went back with 98. It ought to fly on their box. p2 350/ 256mb ram, 6 gig hd.

Gonna put the usual on it, Firefox, Spybot, AVG, MS Security CD with IE6, Adobe Reader, Winrar, Iview, win me defrag, and leave at their option to install zone alarm or kerio firewall.

Any other opinions to make this a decently secure box keeping in mind it is win 98 lol.

It's only a dial up box to no broadband.

If you are a good friend, you'll tell them to get a copy of Win2K Pro and stay away from the mistake that was ME!
