My Samsung cd/dvd drive won't read cd's properly. I'm running Windows ME. There are 2 scenarios: it will either not recognise there is a cd in the drive, or it will recognise there is one there and say how much space is taken up on it but not show any programs when you "explore" it. Soetimes it will seem to be trying to read a cd and it sounds like it is starting and stopping but never actually reads it. Any ideas anyone?

Sounds like it is having trouble reading CD's. Sometimes this can be fixed by cleaning dust off of the optical read head. Blowing the drive out will sometimes fix this. Removing the covers on the drive and very carefully cleaning the optical lens may be necessary.

Often this problem shows up as not being able to read CD-R disks but software install disks and DVD's work. But you hear the drive speeding up and then slowing down a lot.

I had this problem with a Samsung SM308 CDRW/DVD. It would read CDRW's and DVD's but usually not CD-ROM's or CD-R's.
After lots of messing about I borrowed a new drive and tried that. It turned out to be the drive that was faulty.
The computer supplier eventially agreed to replace the drive under guarantee. They have had the old drive since 20th April and I'm still waiting for the new drive to be delivered (over 2 months later).
P.S. Samsung did not reply to my E-mail asking is this a common fault with this model.
I seached on www.ebay.co.uk (an auction site) for the same model as I had and most offered for sale were faulty with the same fault (being unable to read these disc's).
