My power supply went out on my 1998 computer. I have two hard drives -a 6gb original and a 30gb upgrade. Generally everything I use is on the 30gb. I replaced the power supply and the first time I started it up it gave a few strange messages but when it finished it seemed to work fine. I shut it down and restarted it again and it goes into the safe mode and will not come out. Sometimes it gives a missing run.dll message or something like it. I've restarted several time trying to use the keyboard since the mouse doesn't work in the safe mode and I have no luck. I have switched to the old hard drive and that seems to work fine, unfortunatly that has very old files since I havent used it for seveal years. any suggestions? I also fixed the power supply (bad fan and capacitor) and it gives the same result

this is just a gut feeling, but can't hurt trying. Start in safe mode (by choice,F8), go to msconfig startup tab and uncheck loadPowerProfile, its listed twice, uncheck both, then restart.
