I brought up the black screen to go to safe mode. Now what do I do from there to get into the safe mode. I saw choices and hit the correct keys [I thought], but nothing happened. Any HP users out there that can help me? Remember, there are no stupid questions, just stupid people like me...

To get in to 'safe mode' I press the F8 key while the PC starts up ( before the Windows Splash Screen shows )no disc is required. In each corner of the screen you will see the words 'safe mode' and the screen looks a bit crap. To get out of 'safe mode' press CTRL ALT & DELETE, this restarts Windows.
I use 'safe mode' for defragmenting etc.

I got a black screen with 3 choices. I think safe mode was number2. The mouse doesn't show there, I hit the keys it said to, but they only changed to y or n on the bottom of the screen. I ended up just turning the on button off to get out. I wanted to defrag in the safe mode, but ended up defragging turning all stuff off in the clock tray. Maybe I will try again. I am afraid of screwing this PC up, so I try to ask questions here before I get black smoke comming out of the tower.. Newguy

Are you using a start up disc (boot disc) to get into DOS....
Take out the floppy disc ( not needed for 'safe mode') restart the PC (with NO disc in the drive) and press the F8 key before the Windows Splash screen shows, as indicated in response No.1
It's much simpler.
by the way...
In DOS mode the mouse does not work, only the keys work.

I should have added... when you get the choices, select 'safe mode' by using the arrow keys then press the enter button.
