Comment:

On boot-up I get the mss "Run-time error '6' overflow", after which I just click OK to make the mss go away. I'd like to get rid of it though (fix whatever needs fixin'). If I Ctrl-Alt-Del to get rid of stuff, what are the things I should absolutely NOT delete? Any idea?

Thanks in advance,
Tiffany

Error 6 - Overflow
Usually means your data files have been damaged. Reinstalling the program will not hurt, but is
unlikely to help. (When a program is damaged, it will not open far enough to get to an error
message.) Most likely you will need to restore your data files from a backup or delete the data
files and start over.

First of all "Ctrl+Alt+del" will not delete anything. And does nothing as fas booting up is concerned. All it does is turn off or End a task that is running.
However, if you click "Start" then "Run" then type "msconfig". You will see the configuration files that do control what boots up. Select the Startup tab, and in here you will see all the programs that boot up. All that really absolutely needs to be checked (and even some have eliminated this) is StateMgr this enable the Restore function of ME. Then from there, you might want ; antivirus, firewall, Cache manager, and for me I have a Startup Monitor that prevents anything from loading itself.
I would eliminate all but StateMgr and see if the problem disappears. If it does, then add the ones that you need, and see if it comes back. If it does, then eliminate one at a time until you find the culprit. When you find the one causing the problem, then you can look for an update or download to repair it or replace it.
If none of this works....... there are some more involved methods we can try, feel free to e-mail me.
good luck

Oh yeah. Although the Close Program (ctrl+alt+del)is not what you need here, for future reference, you can turn off everything you see there, EXCEPT Explorer. That will close windows.
