I have a 60 gig HP Win ME system. Neither Scnadidk nor Defrag run properly in any mode. I tried them in regular mode and with a start up disk as recommened by there support staff. I have been told that this is a sytem limitation and that the only thing do is partion the drive to two 30 gig drives. I don't know how to do that nor really want to. I feel that if the computer was supposed to have two drives it would have come that way. This is really starting to bug me really bad. Does anybody know of alternate software to defrag and scandisk larger hardrives or a way to fix the limaitation? Please help!! I have a bad cluster that I can't fix or mark bad and it is really starting to screw w my computer.

hughes, 60gig is too big for one partition. just imagine you have that hdd three quarters full of important information, then windows crashes (and it will). you will have to reformat and reinstall windows and you will have lost all your data. by making 2 or 3 partitions you can store the important stuff on the second and third partitions and use the first partition for the operating system. that way if windows has a problem you can reinstall it without losing your main data. when you reformat the c: drive it wont effect the stuff on the other partitions. i would suggest the boot partition be about 4gig and the others any size you like.
the HP tech support told you bulsh*t to get rid of you... ask statements like that in writing from them, or tell them that you are recording the phone call for technical and legal purposes....no partitioning is needed....scandisc and defrag are few of the things that windows ME does really good ;-) ... if your computer or your hard drive is still under waranty (and i believe that all 60 gig still must be) return it or exchange for a new one... i would not trust my data to a HD that is developing a bad cluster and cant be scandisked or defraged... my oppinion is that it is HD pending failure back up all your data and get a new one Regards Miro

tried running defrag and scandisk under every mode and it still wouldn't work. Gave up and bought System Suite Utilities {by "Ontrack" for $40]. Works great! Works very fast! It also comes with a lot of other handy utilities. Best $40 I've spent this year.
