Reply: (edit)IF you are runnig on Windows ME, there should be two copies on the machine and one on the Install CD. The first should be in the \WINDOWS folder. If by chance you deleted it or it was damaged, you should be able to extract a copy from either the install files on your Windows ME computer or from the *.cab files on your ME install CD. To Extract a copy on a working Windows ME system, (START - RUN - msconfig - OK), click "Extract File" bar. Enter the file name: rundll32.exe - Start. Pull down the list in the first field and click on the C:\windows\options\install entry. Enter C:\WINDOWS\TEMP in the second field and click OK. This will extract a copy of rundll32.exe into the \Windows\TEMP directory. OR, you can boot the ME system from the ME recovery disktte and use the EXTRACT command to extract the copy out of C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL. Boot with the windows ME diskette. Enter: (as one line) EXTRACT /A /L C:\WINDOWS C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL\WIN_8.CAB RUNDLL32.EXE

Reply: (edit)Jack really meant, Start Run SFC (not msconfig) and I don't know why he is recommending copying the file to the temp folder. It belongs in \windows directory.

Reply: (edit)Jack had him put it in the TEMP folder because he wants him to find it and does not want him to overlay the one in \Windows if he is running on a working Windows ME system. Windows ME does not boot too will if this program is missing. Assumes he will move it to diskette drive to copy onto broken system. Last example from diskette does put it in \Windows where it belongs, assumes he is trying to fix a broken system. FMI: What is SFC?

Reply: (edit)Jack - SFC=System File Checker In Windows 98, it is where the extract utility is located. Windows ME replaced SFC with SFP (System File Protection). Once Rundll32.exe is extracted to the Temp file, it will be necessary to boot into DOS and copy the file into C:\windows: copy c:\windows\temp\rundll32.exe c:\windows The proper extract command from DOS would be: EXTRACT /A C:\WINDOWS C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL\WIN_8.CAB RUNDLL32.EXE /L c:\windows /A=All Check through all of the Cab files starting with Win_8.cab /L=Location Here is where I would like to extract the file to.

Reply: (edit)Hell, I'm having a pretty irritating problem with the Rundll32 file. For some reason, after my computer has been running for some time, some programs will stop responding, and when I click CTRL+ALT+DEL, it shows that several copies of the Rundll32 file are open. This to me seems to be the reason some of my applications stop working. Can someone please tell me what exactly this file is? Is it part of windows? Is it a trojan? Can it cause such problems in Windows? Thanks a lot for any help.

Reply: (edit)Paul I have no idea how to fix it, but I have the same problem! There's always 3 or 4 of the files running and it causes other programs to get stuck. Anyone know if there's a way to fix this?

Reply: (edit)For those of you that are having multiple rundll32 hang ups, I would recommend going to Start--> Run--> and type in 'MSCONFIG' (without the quotes). From here,go to the startup tab and see what's loading in there.

Reply: (edit)Rundll32.exe is an essential Windows file, used internally to activate a wide variety of system functions, from formatting floppy disks to handling Open with... on the right-click pop-up menu. If the file is missing or corrupted, you'll have big problems. To recover, put your original Windows CD in the CD-ROM drive, open an MS-DOS prompt, and navigate to the folder on the CD-ROM that contains the setup .cab files. I'm running Windows98SE, so it is located in my G:\WIN98 folder. These will be files with sequentially numbered names like Win98_21.cab, Win98_22.cab, and so forth. Within that directory, determine the first CAB file name in numerical sequence. Now enter the command EXTRACT /L C:\Windows /A win98_21.cab rundll32.exe, replacing Win98_21.cab with the actual lowest-numbered CAB file name. This will extract a fresh copy of Rundll32.exe and put this essential file directly into your Windows folder.

Reply: (edit)I tried using the dos command that ZDnet recommended, (Extract/LC\A ....etc etc) and it didnt seem to work for me, I kept getting invalid switch in that first slash, well then I tried using SFC and that worked really well. Just go use the RUN function on your Start menu and type in SFC.exe, it should pull rundll32.exe out of whatever cab file it is hiding in.
