I have currently installed Win ME on my new system, was a fresh install. And now I find I am unable to install any drivers. NiC card, sound card, videao card.... I am always given a Rundll.32 error. Now I have No programs running, its a clean install.
I have re-installed 3 or 4 times. Have formated and installed SEVERAL times. I am tappde out. Have no idea what options I have leftAny ideas out there?
Adam

System specs?
When do you get the error? How are you attempting to install the drivers?
What is the EXACT error message?
What brought on your decision to format?

i've seen that rundll.32 error many times too with ME. doing any technical work with ME is always a pain. i might buy the XP upgrade.
lets see, i've still not been able to use my IR port with my handheld, this modem thing, i had to instal a residential gateway to get the firewire network to work with XP (a network should be detected when boot occurs-doesn't work for ME[both machines are sony viao's....come to think of it sony dropped the ball on the portables especially]) , macromedia apps, adobe stuff, man ME blows.....
I really hope someone knows something about rundll.32 errors. I've spent all morning trying to ge the domn soft56k pci modem to work.....

Rundll32 loads and runs 32-bit DLLs.
DLLs are the workhorses of any program. They are the files that make the calls to other portions of the program to get it to show you something onscreen and allow you to interact with the program. DLLs are executables that do not execute. It is Rundll32's job to execute them.
If you want to have a look at a nice little page on using rundll and rundll32 to program see:
VBnet resource on rundll and rundll32
That being said... it is not usually rundll32.exe that is causing the issue... it is usually the DLL that is associated with the error message (notice the USUALLY in that sentence). When you have multiple copies of a DLL... or an improper copy that the OS does not know how to use, you will get these errors.
Again I ask... What is the EXACT error message?

Ok here are the details. I build a new system to network with my first puter. 800celeron 64megs - Upon installing ME I noticed that it wasnt installing any of the drivers IE monitor keyboard, AND it didnt even look for my video card, nic card or sound card drivers. Now I went into systems and tried to manualy update the drivers but kept runing into this Rundll.32 error.
Wish I could give EXACT message but after receiving said message 136,326 times it NOW gives me a CMDNINST error WOOT love my computer SOOOO much I want more.
Well I went and played in the system.ini file and added a few lines and this cmdninst error "cmdninst has caused an error in setupxdll" might be the result yet I went back to system.ini and my entries weren't there. =(
Believe I will try, yet again, another format.

Adam - you still haven't given the system specs or a description of exactly how the error occurred and when. Also, was it a full version of ME you were loading or an upgrade or is it an OEM disk? It is very unusual for the system not to look for or load drivers on the initial install.

system specs are 800 celeron 64 megs OS on a 1Gig with a 35 gig slave Asus Tuv4x Mainboard, ATI All in Wonder PCI vid card, Soundbalster pro sound. Its Full version ME that I have installed on my main box and works fine.
Just formated re-installed. And am found with my most precious "Rundll.32 has caused an error in setupx.dll"
As for more detail I am just not sure what else I could add that would clarify.
Adam

Which drivers have you installed?
This error can occur when there is a damaged INF file in the c:\windows\inf folder.
It can also occur if rundll32 unloads out of memory before setupx.dll does. This is usually handled by the driver or setup program.

Well I've managed to install my video and sound cards by accesing the .exe on the disk itself. BUT my NIC card is another story. The disk wont let me triger the .exe Seems I have to go through the systems, hardware, driver update, which is what is giving me the error. Things would be skippy if I didnt NEED to network the damn thing.

oh btw thanx for the posts guys.

1. What kind of NIC?
2. Are the drivers specifically made for ME?
3. What happens when you attempt to run the EXE file? Error messages?
If you are getting that error when attempting to install the drivers for the NIC... have you tried different drivers for the NIC? Maybe the ones you have are not good. Maybe the cd is scratched or dirty. ??

Actualy I get the error no matter what it is trying to instal. Be it my video card sound card or nic card. Only the vid abnd sound card I was able to install the drivers VIA the CD's and not windows. IE when windows detected the video card I canceled, accessed the video driver CD and double clicked the instal.exe starting the instal procedure. Now if I let windows try to triger the instal.exe well SETUPX.DLL errors. Now I was able to instal my vid and sound drivers this way BUT my nic card floppy is another story. When I triger the install.exe it pops up a txt message telling me to let windows install =(
So I need to repair setupx.dll but this takes me into areas that I am very noobian in. hehe.

i just installed new/or updated video card drivers which i downloaded from the internet i now get a box at startup titiled rundll error what is this and how can i fix it??
by the way my computer specs are:
celeron 633
256MB Ram
32mb tnt2 Video card
creative vibra sound card
40X CD Rom
10x8x32 Burner
Thanks

I have a curious issue with my computer. I did have windows 2000 installed to a clean hard disk. I was getting multiple instances of RUNDLL.exe in my processes under task manager. I know this because every time my system decided to hang, it was guaranteed that I could go into task manager and find them there. I've got the latest edition of Norton Corperate antivirus, and it picks up nothing. I upgraded to XP pro, and it STILL does the same thing. It gets in the way of photoshop, twain drivers, uninstallations, the works! I was wondering if anyone else is getting this problem, and if so, if you found a good cure for it yet. Any input is appreciated.
