rundll.32 error

I have aPentium III, 500mhz computer running Windows ME,upgraded from Windows 98.Each time I go through Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add-remove programs/Windows setup,I get the message:-"Rundll32 has caused an error in SETUPX.DLL.Rundll32 will now close.If you continue to experience problems,try restarting your computer."(This does not fix the problem.) I am then left with a blank field in the windows setup box.

you may need to reinstall windows. Check the system configuration utility. START - RUN - type in msconfig then ENTER. Uncheck anything that says LOAD POWER PROFILE......
this may or may not help. ususally the power profiles use the rundll32 file....

I had the same problem and I went to c:\windows\options\install\win_17.cab and found rundll32. I extracted it to c:\windows and overwrote the existing file. Then I went to www.dllsearch.com and downloaded a new copy of setupx.dll and replaced it in c:\windows\system and it fixed the problem.
