Try this - it usually works.
Copy and paste these lines exactly as they are, into Notepad, starting at Regedit4, and including everything down to the last inverted commas.
Save it as SETUPX.REG in My Documents and then double click the file to run it.
The registry entries will be edited and hopefully all will be well again.
Good luck.

I tried your solution to fixing "Rundll32 error has caused an error in SETUPX.DLL" but still get the same error message. When I opened the file it asked "open" and I chose to open with notepad. Is this wrong and should the file open with another program to make the fix work? Here is the post I got the fix from.

BoomerBC,

Just double-click the file you made, or right-click it, and click Merge. Then follow the prompts, and agree. Also, restart your computer, after. That should use regedit.exe, to perform the task.

If you want, here is that same reg file, already made. Just click the link, and choose (select) "Save this file to disk". Then double-click it and....... Same as I have said before.

Good Luck

I tried this fix and this worked like a charm. Anyone know if it is safe to delete the INF files that I saved in a new folder?
This solution was thanks to a post by newgrl back in 2001. Here is the message - Name: newgrl

Try this to fix your error:
First unhide all files using Folder options from tools>>folder options>>view tab when you open the search function.
Do a search on your computer for:
layout*.inf

You should see several layout.inf files like:
layout1.inf
layout2.inf
etc...

Grab them all and move them someplace safe like your desktop or a new folder you create.

Try add/remove programs>>windows setup now.

Thanks for you help. I saved your answer in case this other fix isn't permanent or causes problems.
What a blessing these forums are and thanks to all who take the time to post these very helpfull messages.

To the person who gave me the suggestion of right clicking the saved notepad file and then clicking "MERGE" --- When I tried "Krystyna's fix" I don't have any MERGE item in my right click menu when I open the notepad file. How else would I get this to work? See previous post Rundll32 error in SETUPX.DLL ANY IDEAS. Thanks

Just to clarify.

Are you a 100 % certain you have created Krystyna's reg fix file correctly ?

Did you open notepad and copy and paste into notepad the following.

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\VarLDID]

"28700"="C:\\PROGRA~1"
"28701"="C:\\Program Files"
"28702"="C:\\PROGRA~1"
"28710"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\ACCESS~1"
"28720"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\ACCESS~1\\HYPERT~1"
"28730"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1"
"28732"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1"
"28740"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\MICROS~1"
"28742"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\COMMON~1\\MICROS~1"
"29000"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1"
"29001"="C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer"
"29002"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1"
"29400"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1\\CONNEC~1"
"29401"="C:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer\\Connection Wizard"
"29402"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\INTERN~1\\CONNEC~1"
"29800"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\NETMEE~1"
"29801"="C:\\Program Files\\NetMeeting"
"29802"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\NETMEE~1"
"30000"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\OUTLOO~1"
"30001"="C:\\Program Files\\Outlook Express"
"30002"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\OUTLOO~1"
"30100"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system"
"30400"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\Plus!\\Themes"
"30600"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\MESSEN~1"
"30601"="C:\\Program Files\\Messenger"
"30602"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\MESSEN~1"
"30800"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\WINDOW~1"
"30801"="C:\\Program Files\\Windows Media Player"
"30802"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\WINDOW~1"
"30810"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\MOVIEM~1"
"30811"="C:\\Program Files\\Movie Maker"
"30812"="C:\\PROGRA~1\\MOVIEM~1"
"30900"="C:\\WINDOWS\\APPLIC~1"
"30901"="C:\\WINDOWS\\Application Data"
"30902"="C:\\WINDOWS\\APPLIC~1"
"30910"="C:\\WINDOWS\\APPLIC~1\\MICROS~1"
"30911"="C:\\WINDOWS\\Application Data\\Microsoft"
"30912"="C:\\WINDOWS\\APPLIC~1\\MICROS~1"

Did you close notepad and in the dialogue box that appears straight after, click YES to save the changes ?

Next, in the "Save As" dialogue box did you change the "Save IN" location to "My Documents" ?

Did you then change the "File Name" to.

SETUPX.REG

That's a .REG extension.

Just making sure that's EXACTLY what you did because if you did you would be able to either right click and see (and select) "Merge" or double click on it.

And try to keep everything on one thread it's easier to follow. ta.

Viking,

That's why I made a reg file, and put it on my server ;-)

That way, Brian could of just downloaded it, and wouldn't have to worry about proper extensions, or word wrap ;-)

And I'll second that, about keeping on one thread (question) Thanks

S.T.A.R. :)

I did notice you'd put it up and it was very nice of you to do it. But I figured if BoomerBC was still asking the question then he didn't take advantage of your kind time saving offer.

Besides you know what some people are like they like hands on fiddlin and having a go. Who can blame them after all, it's fun (?) =)

That's the only reason I spelt out Krystyna's original instructions. Half the time when I do that I'm just seeing if I can remember the stuff myself anyway :p :)

Viking,

Yes, that may be true. Well, most of the time, it can be fun. But, causing a problem by tinkering to much. Sure does take the fun out of it though. Kind of like, trying to stay ahead of an upcoming problem. Just to find out, your the one that caused the problem, in the first place. I think you can relate to what I'm saying. Maybe not.

Take it easy,

Thanks forall your help. I did try all the different suggestions, however, I can't see any "merge" selection when I right-click on anything, document or program. Maybe it was removed by one of the tweak programs I used earlier. Could you tell me if wordwrap should be on or off when pasting the file to it. And I tried saving the file naming it SETUPX.REG and also REGEDIT as wawadave suggested. The error message is gone now and I can access ADD/REMOVE programs and use that , but when I go into Windows Setup tab I have the programs I had installed before but when I click on any and try to remove any it just comes back to what was originally there. Also Setup does't show any MB of used space any of these programs are occupying. I t looks like Windows Setup access is restricted from being used, probably from one of those trial tweakers I used a few weeks ago. Despite this little problem my computer seems to work great with no other problems. .Ps. Cuold you tell me what you mean by proper extensions, or word wrap and try to keep everything on one thread ? Thanks so much. Brian from BC :)
