Rundll32 error in setupx.dll

Windows Me,a couple days ago i tried to use windows setup and got a rundll32 in setupx.dll error.I downloaded a copy of setupx.dll,went into safe mode,renamed the copy thats there to setupold.dll and pasted the new one to the system folder and that cured the problem for windows setup.A little later I needed to use Network Places but when i right clicked i got a program error message that I was attempting to access an invalid DLL.no other info was given.SOOO I reversed what I had done with the setupx.dll and I now could access network places but Windows setup was gone again with the same error.Anyone know how to cure both problems,and why curing one would cause another.thanks Frank

Well,if anyone has this same problem I found a fix for it as follows.There were more than one .INF files in C:\Windows\inf that were apparently corrupted,they were Layout.inf,layout1.inf and layout2.inf,I just renamed them to layous.xxx and that corrected the problem.Frank

i have used both of the fixes with success. the layout files & the registry file.
had this problem 3 times in 1 yr.
