My mom got the GONE.A virus on her 566 emachine running ME. Her friend put in a win98 startup disk and fdisked and formated the HD then tried to run the emachine restore CD. Now the restore CD will not work at all. Can anyone help me with this?

You have start with the floppy in the drive and then choose "start with cdrom support" option. It will give you a new drive letter for the CD drive.Lets say its assigns X as your cd drive. Then at the C:\ prompt type cd X:\ It should now read X:\ Now type dir and see whats listed for programs. You may see recover.exe(or install.exe or repair.exe-you get the idea) or somthing else similar.Thats what you want to run so you would then type-
recovery (or whatever program looks promising)
and the program should run.
It(the CD) may also autostart on its own.
You could also try a ultimate boot disk and it MAY do the install for you Make one from here http://www.startdisk.com/Web2/ubd/ubd.htm

Make sure you tell her to use the restore cd next time to format. Her poor friend must be feeling really bad.
