** RESOURCE: DELINDEX/DELTA.BAT

The newest threads are listed first. Newer posts may have more current information and/or build on experience or on info from prior posts, but not always. One of the advantages of looking at prior posts instead of posting a new thread is that you’ll immediately see multiple solutions and/or conflicting advice or maybe even a lively discussion. While the best answer to some questions may always be the same, not all advice works for every system. Therefore, be cautious, especially of advice touting one-size fits-all cures for anything and everything that ails your computer. Some posters hawk software they just discovered without fully knowing it does, or even if it can harm your system. Some of these RESOURCE posts may include URLs for MS Knowledge Base articles and/or other websites; if so, they’re listed after Computing.net threads. Six digit numbers are from the Win9x forum; 5 & 4 digit numbers are from the WinME forum. For the reasons behind these posts, see RESOURCE: Introduction. Please add other resources to this post, and I’ll incorporate them in updated listings. Exceptional links (very comprehensive or having info/advice not found elsewhere) will be indicated with »double guillemets«. This updates and therefore replaces post # 23471.

(The primary purpose of DELINDEX is to delete Index.dat files which are never resized, and only get bigger. They contain all your web surfing history since they were (re)created, and large index.dat files can cause performance issues with browsing. Index.dat files cannot be deleted if Explorer is running. The secondary purpose is to delete junk files, for reasons of space, privacy, and performance. DELTA.BAT deletes index.dat files everytime you start or reboot your computer.)

Is this like an advertisement for your own personal interest?

I thought this was a question and answer board. Not an "I've got nothing better to do than post my own personal stuff." on someone else's board.

My choice is my own, and I can remove the files myself. If it's really that good upload it to CNET and let each individual user decide.

Enough of the RESOURCE selling okay.

I think you missed the point of the resource posts. This one just happens to be about Renaissance Mans program so i can see how a newcomer would mistake it as some sort of shamless plug. And even if it was...Its freeware and works well.

The idea behind the resource posts are stated in the link offered in his first paragraph of this thread:Resource Introduction.

The resource posts categorize frequently asked questions for quick reference. Many users of the board visit them each day when attempting to help out others.

You will find a list of resource posts here at the computing.net faq page:
http://www.computing.net/faq/indexme.html

Thank you Renaissance Man for spending time compling this information and thanks to everyone who participates here from the experts to the new software testers :).

Dear John Doe
Maybe I misinterpret your post but it seems to me we have 1 person offering information & advice for nil reward and another giving him a spray for personal satisfaction.
If this is the limit of your input, maybe your time could be more constructively used elsewhere

That said
Ren. I downloaded delindex to desktop as you said but when I went to run it I got bad command message
At the time I had Delta.Bat installed which ran at start up and always left bad Command screen. It did say however that delta had finished.Checking Cookies, Temp I/Net files etc showed it had weaved its magic.
I have however decided to use delindex so Delta does not interfere with prog installs etc that need to reboot.Don't know if it does affect or not just would rather run delindex as needed.
any ideas?
prety sure I did everything as your site suggested.

::Installation::
1.Download delindex.exe to your desktop.
2.Double click the icon.
3.Click the UNZIP button in the winzip self extractor dialogue box. This self extractor will install the files to the correct location "C:\" by default. Do not choose another directory by hitting the browse button.
4.Click ok when your informed that 3 files were unzipped succesfully and click the close button in the winzip self extractor dialogue box.

::Operation::

1.Insert a windows me startup floppy (also known as boot disk) and restart the computer.
2.Choose option 4.minimal boot when prompted.
3.At the A:\prompt type in C:\ and press enter then at the C:\prompt type in delindex.bat and press enter.
4.Follow onscreen instructions to run Delindex. [To keep it simple just hit the letter M for More.]
5.Once delindex has finished remove the floppy and restart the computer.

Disclaimer:

These instructions are offered assuming you know exactly what delindex does before running it. If your unsure or have questions please refer to the read me file here:

C:\Read-Me.txt
[This file will exist after installation of delindex]

ftp://burzurq.com/delindex/Read-Me.txt
[This is a copy of the readme file posted on the internet.]

Any additional comments or questions about the improvement or operation of delindex should be directed toward the author Renaissance Man.

I’ve often seen what appear to be posts for someone’s gain and have been offended. These threads in this RESOURCE are about my batch file, but they include questions, suggestions, problems, and solutions that DELINDEX & DELTA users might find helpful, or they may introduce others to DELINDEX for the first time. DELINDEX and the RESOURCE posts are just my way of saying thank you to all those on the Computing.net who've help me learn and understand so much. I'd really like responses on RESOURCE posts to be about posting additional resources or alternative points of view; that way I can include them when I post an update, for the benefit of all. Therefore, I do not want to answer questions about DELINDEX or DELTA on this thread; please post problems or questions in a new thread on the Windows ME forum with DELINDEX in the subject line. That way others may be able to offer more advice sooner to the benefit of all who see the post. I welcome your comments and suggestions; please send them to me at delindex@yahoo.com.

Hello Renaissance Man,

Sorry... a little mistake about the 9x link to Delta2, below is the right sentence:

Info about the NEW 6/21/02 Delta.bat is here (ME Forum) and here (9x Forum).

Gérard from Paris, France
P.S.: I'm translating/adapting both files into French and will hopefully "launch" them on Monday.
