Comment: I'm so frustrated...our new small business has been open almost 3 weeks. The service who set up our office brought in these 'big, fine computers' and the suckers have Me. We already despise it. I know I'm qualified to format the HD, but I'm not feeling very confident. They're Pavillions and we want to format and install our 98 instead. Would it be a huge imposition for some patient soul to kind of 'step' me through the process. I'm reasonably knowledgable, just nervous. We're just so stressed out at this point and that would take a huge load off. Thank you so much for your time...this is an awesome forum. TC

Reply: (edit)could try it out on 1 machine first to see how it goes. with a startup disk ,choose cd-rom support ,make sure you can access the cd-rom with the 98 cd in it,then format c: ,after formatting change to the cd drive letter e: if only one harddrive, type setup and win98 should install. before doing this right click my computer ,choose properties ,and write down all the items in device manager ,such as display adapter, modem ,etc. so if win98 can't find the proper driver you can download it ,or download the drivers 1st and put on floppies ,make sure you have the monitor driver ,so you can change the display to the proper settings.etc. are these computers networked?

Reply: (edit)The people that sold you your computers are either crooks or idiots. The HP line of computers(to the best of my knowledge) is not 100% compatible with WinME!(don't get me wrong..WinME is great if you have the hardware) Anyway..Use a Startup disk to boot & choose CD support Type: format c: /u (Unconditional format) Change to CD Drive (D:)? CD WIN98 SETUP

Reply: (edit)The two are supposed to be...that's what kicked this whole thing off - a network card problem. But, yes, they will be. Don't misunderstand, I'd do this at home in a heartbeat...I'm gun-shy because we've had so much stress trying to start this business and I don't want to create more. You guys are great...thanks so much

Reply: (edit)A relative just bought a brand new Dell with ME and he is having a fit. I suspect it is the Network card also because when I tried reinstalling ME again the installation program stated that the 3com manager in Device Manager is not supported or recognized and ME was going to remove it. What type of card do you have?

Reply: (edit)I've got an HP Pavilion with Windows Me too.....it drives me NUTS it so slow and locks up so much. Man, I thought Windows 95 was slow when I first used it......I don't like Windows, but I hate Windows 98 a lot less than I do Windows Me.

Reply: (edit)getting all the right drivers is the 1st thing to do ,for the motherboard-ide-agp ,video card ,network card, modem, soundcard, monitor. and some manufacturers don't have them for win-me yet ,so it makes it difficult to run. memturbo sped up this machine by reclaiming memory, http://www.memturbo.com and ispeed helped some for internet speeds, using the optimal settings, http://www.zdnet.com/downloads/stories/info/0,,000R0B,.html once you get everything updated ,me is ok , but 98se was faster.and the last beta of 98 was faster yet.

Reply: (edit)Alot of the HP computers are released with Windows ME. So they might have just gave you what was offed to them. I would just Fdisk and format the hard drive and install windows 98 in the normal process.

Reply: (edit)Since the Pavillion has a set of recovery disks, and one of the options there is "format and reinstall", can I just use it to do the format, then put my 98 disk in for the re-intall. Frankly, I'm ready to go back to CompUSA and just tell them we're extremely unhappy and see if they'll do anything about it. With so many issues, I wonder if they'd be honest enough with me to just agree and have a tech come do the format.

Reply: (edit)Im considering the Me to 98 also. ME and my Pavilion get along about as well as those people on Survivor. How can I be sure I will have the correct drivers for graphics, modem, keyboard etc. before reformatting? And second, how will I know which are detected and which need fixing after the 98 install? I just don't want to be stuck w/out an essential hardware in the transition ie, mouse, keyboard, moniter... Thanks for any help!

Reply: (edit)I just opened my brand new Pavillion XT840 with ME installed and the HP (3-Com converted) ethernet card wouldn't even flicker. I finally (after 3 iterations) got ahold of the HP warranty folks who are sending me a whole new tower! My vote is for F-Disc and install Win 98. The problem is I only have the Upgrade version.... hmmmm??
