Here's a weird one for all you compu-wizards.

I was sent a .pps file, but I don't have Microsoft PowerPoint in order to view it. So, what I did was change the file's extension from a ".pps" to a ".exe" file, thinking that doing this would cause the program to run when I double-clicked it.

What's happening now is that, not only does the program not run, but I can't do ANYTHING with the file. I can't rename it, move it, delete it, anything. The same holds true even when I have Windows running in safe mode, or when I right-click on the file and change some of the properties attributes.

Any ideas? Many thanks.

For starters, naming a file .exe does not make it an executable.

You got lucky. I could just as well have trashed you PC.

Boot in DOS and:

ren thefile.exe thefile.pps

Or, since you don't have Powerpoint, you nay as well:

del thefile.exe

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Download Powerpoint viewer from Microsoft's website. You will then be able to view the attachment with the correct program.

Windows ME doesn't have DOS, unless you use a boot disk, so that won't work.

Are you getting access denied errors?
If so;

Start command prompt, then press CTR+ALT+DELETE and ending all the processes (explorer.exe, systray.exe, etc) until there is nothing left except command.exe.

From the command prompt, navigate to the files location:

C: <enter>
cd\folder1\folder2\folder3 <enter>
(e.g. cd\windows\system\drivers)
ren thefile.exe thefile.pps <enter>

Then download powerpoint view using the link provided by plainandsimple.

GiPo@MoveOnBoot - copying/moving/renaming/deleting files and folders on the next system boot.

Look in file utilities on the main page for this.

Great program used it several times myself.

Actually, I used my DOS boot disk and deleted the file through DOS.

Done deal!

Gee, wish I'd thought of that.
