Subject: Remove XP Pro and install Me - HELP
OS: XP Pro (retail)
CPU/Ram: 2.40C Northwood P4 / 1Gig
Comment:

I just built a new PC after using my old one for 4 years from new. I used to have Win98 and was happy with it. I loaded XP Pro (retail) and have learnt to hate it with a vengeance. It's invasive and controlling and needs shooting!

Needless to say, I want to remove it and install Win Me which I have since bought. I've used win Me before and like it.

The problem is that I loaded XP Pro direct onto my new computer. It wasn't an upgrade and the only way I've found to remove it is if its an upgrade, so I'm stuck.

How the heck can I remove it totally from my hard drive?

Have you tried formatting it? Get a windows 98 bootdisk and follow these instructions.

Hope that helps.

Well ted, I use Me and it does not crash. everything works right and it games just fine. I believe, if you sort your Me install out, you'll like it.

There are lots of places with advice on how to format and reinstall - they are listed in point 17 of the homepage link on this response. When you have installed ME, also visit the homepage to set it up to maximum efficiency, and don't heed uninformed responses - ME is actually the most efficient OS for games.

Thanks for the advice all. I've just been told I'm to get a copy of the new system to evaluate in a day or so, so I'm adding a new hd for that. Sounds interesting. I'll install Me on the main hd and use that until the new O/S proves to be either good or not, as the case may be. XP can go and do the other thing.....

Keep on truckin'!

I agree with Trev & Skip...WinME works great! All you gotta do is tweak it a bit...& Trev has a bunch of great tips on his page. Nice going Trev! ;) I like ME better than 98, & from my experience, it seems to run my games better too.

I run XP Pro too...I don't really care for it's "cartoon-like" look. I've tweaked it to make more like 9x/ME by going to the "classic menu" & making several other changes.

Hey Trev, ever consider a WinXP Tweak page? LOL!
