Comment:

When trying to reinstall Windows ME from the OEM's (HP) reinstallation disks, I get the following message:

'Invalid System Disk. Replace the disk, and then press any key.'

This doesn't make sense, since I've reinstalled the operating system before using the disks and never received that message. And, yes, I start with Disk #1.

I'm out of ideas and would be grateful for any suggestions.

PS This is for a good friend with Windows ME (I'm running XP).

vipergg:

No floppies; A drive is empty.

Update: I got the first (1 out of 3) reinstallation CDs to run. When it got to the end (100% installed), I received the following:
________________________

Searching Zip: M:A. PAQ
CDR101: Not Ready Reading Drive M
Abort, Retry, Fail
________________________

Using 'Retry' simply brings back the above message after a few seconds. 'Fail' does nothing. And 'Abort' brings back the original message: 'Invalid System Disk. Replace the disk, and then press any key.'

I'm stuck :-(

PS I have two CD drives (M & N). Those are the letters they were assigned from the factory (HP); I've never changed them. Besides, as I mentioned, these reinstallation CDs have already worked several times before with NO problem. Now, there are problems.

When you get to 100% of disk one take it out. insert disk2 and hit retry.

I've tried that: "When you get to 100% of disk one take it out. insert disk2 and hit retry." On a normal reinstallation, when disk #1 is finished, the following message appears: "Insert disk 2 and continue." But thanks for the tip, Richard59.

Again, at the end of Disk #1, I'm still getting the following message:

Searching Zip: M:A. PAQ
CDR101: Not Ready Reading Drive M
Abort, Retry, Fail

If anyone can help, I'd sure appreciate it.

Sounds like it's looking for the DOS Floppy that came with the computer which probably makes a RAM Drive (M:), then installs a custom version of your Millenium CD for the HP...

Thanks to everyone who responded. The problem turned out to be the CD drive itself! It was the last thing I suspected, since the PC is relatively new.
