You must reinstall from within Windows like when you install a game.Otherwise if you install with a boot disk the registry is lost and you have to reinstall all the programs. Try the system restore tool to a previous date if you can boot to safety mode or normal Windows with the problems you know exist, then reinstall like explained before.Good luck.

What do you mean...'i cannot even bootinto my pc'?

you need to describe your problem in more detail before a solution is forthcoming. like..what messages, if any, are shown....does the screen stay blank?...etc.

Try to fix it first :

When did this happen ?

Have you tried scanreg/restore ? Stick in a windows me boot disk, choose option 4 "minimal boot" [if your asked to choose] at the a:\prompt type in scanreg /restore [note the space after scanreg]

How about uninstalling whatever from safe mode to see if windows will load ? If you installed hardware or software try phisically removing the hardware and entering safemode to uninstall the software or drivers.

You have a real windows disk or a recovery disk? If a recovery disk just stick in disk 1 and restart the computer. The recovery disk should autorun and give you some options. Look for something like "reinstall without format". Follow onscreen instructions.

If you have a real windows disk....

Ive never tried to install windows over itself from a boot disk. SO long as you dont format it should only write over whats already there. The problems you will face are.. software youve installed may not function properly. You may be able to fix this easily by just reinstalling the software so that the registry knows its there.

See windowsreinstall.com for step by step screen shots for installing windows.

You need a windows me startup disk. If you didnt create one while windows was working go to www.bootdisk.com and locate a me bootdisk. Download it to your desktop, insert a blank floppy and double click the file you downloaded. It will write the disk.

Insert the boot disk on the pc you wish to reinstall windows on. At the A:\ prompt type in E:\setup.exe Change the E:\ in my example to your cd-roms drive letter. It will be displayed onscreen while the boot disk is loading.

setup.exe will luanch windows me setup. Follow onscreen instructions and make sure you install it to C:\windows.

Invest in a cd-r and begin making regular backups of your data. 40X's writers are about $60.00 [US] now and well worth it.

I had the same problem and reloaded windows me over itself and it retained all info and access to all programs, however when shutting down the computer does not shut off. The desktop icons go away and then I get a black screen with a cursor and to shut down I have to hold the PO button 4 seconds. The shut down is my problem now so any suggestions?

I had the same problem, lost my windows and I only have a "me" recovery cd, but my computer only reads A drive and C drive. I tried changing the boot drive and that didn't work. Any suggestions? would getting a boot disk from bootdisk.com work? thanks so much.

I am having a similar problem. I can not get into the PC. I've tried to get into it using safe mode but it won't let me. So thus i can not remove any programs using safe mode. Any advice?? Should i just use the boot disk and do scanreg/restore?
