Can I reinstall Windows ME over the existing setup? Some of my registry files are corrupted and I would like to start fresh.
Thanks

You could, but I would reccomend formating the disk and reinstalling it then. It works for me, anyway. And it would be a good idea to partition your disk, so you can have an extra disk, where you can save your backups, just in case you have to reinstall again.

WAIT!!!!!!!!
LOL first you should make sure you have a FULL install of ME. I definately recommend backing up your C:\Windows\Options folder. I just formated and re-installed with Dell's re-install CD and now find I have nothing in the Options folder. Also, I am told that some OEMs do not even supply a CD that will re-install to a clean hard drive.

Hi Nancy.
Sounds like I had exactly the same problem as you a couple of days ago. I tried a Registry Resore from the boot disk but to no avail. I shyed away from the drastic reformat bit and just re-installed ME over it's self and my problem was fixed. Now I only have the usual question relating to ME.

Try that first. My version is the OEM.
Regards

Hi Nancy yes it is very successful re-installing the os over itself (95, 98 & me)/ I have had a lot of succes doing this especially for replacing missing files & it beats doing a re-format each time
doing a reformat every time you have a missing file or two can be rather drastic & very un-necessary

nancy, it would be nice if you and other people would tell us what sort of computer you have. that way we can give the best advice without guessing if you have a clone or an oem brand name with a rescue cd.the advice for either is slighty different.

Microsoft have an article on the Windows CDs on how to do this and also on their website. On the ME CD you'll find the excellent article in \addons\document\guide and it's called mqsg (believe it or not). The information you want starts about page 31. On a PC with ME already installed you will also find a similar article at C:\WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL\CLEANHD.TXT
On the website, go to
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q255/8/67.asp
and
http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/topics/winme/setup/setupht.asp

http://www.windowsreinstall.com/ is also useful

Be very careful you have all your drivers and original disks for all your components and peripherals, or download latest versions before you start.

If you need the article mailed, mail me and I will send it.

Hi guys. Don't know if you can help. I'm trying to re-format my disk ask a dodgy installation of Linux has left me unable to boot windows. Luckily I backed up all my work!
Does anyone know how I can do this. I do not have the windows ME cd as it came pre-installed and all I have that looks of any use is a restore disk but it only boots me into dos and I'm not sure where to go from here.
FORMAT C: doesn't work which leaves me wondering.
Any help would be great!

screw reformating the drive. It deletes all your drivers and files which means you will need to install everything back over again. And some of things may not work the way are suppose to work. Including with windows 95, 98 and 2000.
