Comment:

When trying to re-install Windows ME(OEM) full version on top of the existing version, I get an error message:

"Message SU0168 Your computer already has an operating system installed which cannot be upgraded by this version of Setup. Please obtain the Windows Millennium Edition Upgrade".

In the Setup.txt file in C:\Windows\Options\Install, it says:

This error can occur when you are attempting to install an OEM version of Windows Me over a previous version of Windows, or
A program has installed an OEM version of SetupX.dll that makes it appear that your current version of Windows is the OEM version.

1. Place your Windows 95 or Windows 98 CD in your CD-ROM drive.
2. From a command prompt, change to your CD-ROM drive letter.
3. Type "Extract /a base4.cab SetupX.dll /l c:\".
4. Copy the SetupX.dll from your C: to your Windows\System directory.
5. Run Windows Millennium Edition Setup again.

I got 2 questions:

1: Why do I have to place a Windows 95/98 cd to fix the problem when the original installation is a Windows ME OEM full version? Or is that for when Windows 95/98 are the original installations?
2: Does this really work?

Thanks

Message SU0018
"Setup cannot create files on your startup drive and cannot set up Windows 98. There may be too many files in the root directory of your startup drive, or your startup drive letter may have been remapped."

The root folder of a drive holds a maximum of 512 entries (files or folders). This message indicates that Setup has detected too many directory entries in the root folder of your computer, and Setup cannot create the files it needs to set up Windows 98. Move or delete some files from the root folder of your drive, and then run Setup again.

I forgot to mention that the hard drive is partitioned using System Commander 7 with Win 98SE on C, my files on D (logical partition), Win ME on E & Win XP on F.

Dog: So it's a possibility that the drive letters have been remapped. I went through the Google results. Thanks for that.

Jennifer: I want to re-install over the top of the existing version using the boot floppy as per normal clean install.

That is only true if the drive is FAT16 - which is not terribly likely - and in fact, that maximum is reduced when long filenames are used

So when you attempt to reinstall and select the drive letter, are you selecting E, or isn't the install getting that far?

It doesnt get that far. I know what you mean coz whenever i did a re-install of Win 98SE either clean or over the top, it showed default install E:\Windows but I was able to change to C:\Windows. Win ME doesnt even show that. The SU0168 msg appears instead.

Seeing that you mentioned E & I always got E defaults, it sounds like theres a reason why this happens.

Yeah - you're using a boot manager. Win9x/ME needs to be installed on "C:" (boot files anyways) - it can be a whole different ball game with a boot loader

You stated that:
"forgot to mention that the hard drive is partitioned using System Commander 7 with Win 98SE on C, my files on D (logical partition), Win ME on E & Win XP on F."

To solve your problem do the following.

1st Use System Commander 7 to disable your boot manager.

2nd Once the boot manager has been disabled, boot up with the System Commander 7 boot disks and use it to hide all partitions except the partition where you have ME installed and also set it as the Active partition, this will make it C: Drive when you make it active.

3rd Now reboot the computer with a Windows ME boot disk and at the A:\> prompt type the following.
C:\Windows\Options\Install\setup.exe
and then Press the Enter key and it will run the installation for ME that will install over the top of your existing ME without loosing your files.

4th Once the ME installation is finished and the way you like it use System Commander 7 to resetup your boot manager. and you should be back in to normal.

You could also do a clean install instead, after formatting the hard drive - it's usually the better option. You will find all the information you need to do it at point 17 on my homepage link.

I know I can do a clean install. But I dont want to coz then I'll have to re-install all the programs & drivers & tweak it again to the way I got it now.

JPW, it worked! Thanks mate. Another question now: I had to re-install IE6 which was to be expected. But do I have to re-install all the ME patches? Thanks again.
