"He has the two disks for that." What disks are you talking about? Floppy disks? Do you have the Windows ME OS Installation CD?

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

Yes. 2 disks..Disk 1 and 2. Both are CD-Rom
Both are for returning Me to factory condition. I've looked a few places online and they also mention Disk 1 and 2. But they indicate that there should be options.
We had to do this about four years ago. And as I remember when we put disk 1 in. It had the option to 1. reinstall ME or 2. Install drivers. And that is what it says in his ME manual. But, when we put in disk 1 it only shows drivers. It doesn't make sense to me.
Everything we have tried to do has been complicated and comfusing. Thank you for your post and your attempt to help.
Dan

Dan,

I wrote a response, and ...that's a different issue a :-) for JW

Are you starting the computer, or restarting the computer, with the CD in its drive? Or are you puting the CD in, when it (the OS) is running/loaded. I'm asking if you are booting the computer, to the CD and not the harddrive. Just a thought. And what is this computer, that your friend has, thanks. (gateway|emachine|ect-ect)

You're Welcome,

Hello CrazyOne..Thanks for posting.
We have tried it both ways. The manual said to start the computer and put the disk in before the computer boots.
It is an E-Machine.
Also. when I look at the properties of the CD in D: I don't see anything like "Restore"
But these are the only disks he got when he bought the Comp. In 2000. And as i did say, We used these same two disks to restore it about four years ago. And it worked great until the past year when he asked me to help him.
I tried to post last night but when i tried to post there was an error on the screen that said server error. And i saw that no new posts were here until today.
Thanks very much. Help on this is truly appreciated.
Dan

Dan,

"I tried to post last night but when i tried to post there was an error on the screen that said server error. And i saw that no new posts were here until today."

Yes, there was a little problem from last night, to this morning. That's what the >>:-) for JW (Justin Weber) was about.

"We have tried it both ways."

So, when you started the computer, with the CD in its drive. Did it boot to the CD only? Or did it start wind*ws, and then bring up about drivers. What state, is the/this computer in now? Does it start and run normally? Or are there small, or even big problems. Also, you said you have places on the internet, it gave you instructions. Could you give me a link/address, to one of those, thanks.

"But they indicate that there should be options"

Yes, you should see some kind of prompt, to tell/choose which thing you wish to do. The default, will be drivers. That's to prevent, an accidental install. Or re-install, however you want to look at it.

E-Machine, model is _______ (<fill in the blank, thanks)
The writing on the CDs is, also Version# ect. _______ (Also, fill in this blank, thanks)

I'm trying to play catch-up on things, and still enjoy the holiday. So, it might be a slower/longer wait, for a response from me. Just letting you know, ok.

Hello CrazyOnw:
I will be going to my Friend's to get some of the info you asked for.. I have been trying to find the websites that had the statements you asked for also.
Not sure about anyone else but That can be confusing trying to backtrack for that. I saw one site talking about the need to be organized and not be "Clutter Minded" I guess i fall into the latter category.

I can list some of the problems we have had. And they are to ME.no pun..Big.
1. Outlook Express quit workintg
2. Cannot restore to previous date. We follow the instructions and it goes through it's process and computer restarts and it says restore "Unsuccessful.
3. Firewall (sygate) quit working..disappeared from tray. and when clicked on on the desktop would not open. Located in Program files. when clicked would not open.
4.Deleted sygate to recycle bin. downloaded the newest one i could find and when i saved it to C: it would not go there. It said that there was already a file named "Applications"
and to remove it or rename it.
After renaming it. Same thing. Said to remove it or delete it. Way too much stuff in
"Applications" to delete it. I moved the "Applications" file to "Windows" and tried ot install Sygate again. It said there was a file named "Applications" in Windows and to delete it or rename it.
I went to Windows and renamed the folder under the name "DogPoop" (I was tired)
and tried to install sygate. It said there was a folder named DogPoop and to delete it or rename it. I thought about making folders ffor the files and programs in "Applications" and moving them there and deleting the empty folder. but i saw my sanity meter was pegging out.
Everything that i have tried has created a new problem. It is easy to forget where i started.
I saw on more than one site that BIOS has to be configured to allow it to read the ME install disks. Don't know squat about BIOS.
And we didn't do that a few years ago.
Well. I don't want to type too much..thanks for replying...Maybe i could pay you in cache.
Dan.

Hi again CrazyOne:

I forgot to mention that Help Central
(Help Screen) does not work.

1.Computer Model emachine (600 is)
2.Both disks 1 and 2 say..
(Restore CD)
(Bootable CD) Version 1.5

@1999-2000 emachines inc.
@1981-2000 Microsoft Corp.

If you have time off enjoy it. Right now i am sure that it is gonna be a full restore after figuring out the RESTORE disks.

One other addendum. I broght his restore disks to my house. I have Xp and i put one in and it didn't do anything differently
Since these are not auto booting. Perhaps it is a change in the bios to allow auto booting.. not sure..thanks again for trying to help me and others out on this very friendly and awesome website.

you can use an ME boot disk (floppy) to load from the cd drive right over the top of the old install but sounds like you need to get your files saved to another HD and reload from scratch, ME is just like this sometimes
dump that HD and reconfigure and reload it... this OS will not just run forever w/out conflicts PERIOD :) you may have also been HIT by the sounds of it - but that many problems! ??? and you want to try and fix em all and expect your sys to run worth a sh*^.. aint gonna happen

HongPilot: Don't think you read the post(s) i wrote. I don't want to save anything. I only want to restore ME to factory settings. I cannot get the Option to do that with the ME restore disks. I only get the Driver Option. If i wasn't clear. I am sorry. Thank you for your post.

ufobbop, by (Dan);-)

If you don't want to check/mess with settings in the BIOS. You just might, not get anywhere. Sure there could be a way, to jump start it. By use of a boot disk, or even... nevermind that, doesn't matter.

Just Love, the the things you quoted
:-)
"Since these are not auto booting"

That, was what I was trying to find out, with my question(s) too you. Four (4) years... Hmm, alot can be changed, done, in that time, yes. A change|addition here and there. A mod, to this and that. Yes-yes, things are a changing >>> "Where's my Commodore 64???" ;-)

Sorry, I wasn't able to stay with this fully. Good luck, to you, and your friend.
