yesterday i lost sound. dev mgr noted an apostraphe under video, sound, etc and also under my USB's. i dl'd the proper softpaq from compaq but it didn't work. (all this happened after i did a mcirosoft update and it asked me to update directx.)
thinking the dirx was a problem, went to major geeks and dl'd the remover for it.
reset bios to default...removed all devices under sound and then USB and rebooted to normal mode. they reinstalled (or so it looked like) but still have the apostraphes.

compaq suggests that i go to cab files and use the setup program to reinstall windows. they claim i won't lose any data but then they give me this canned warning about them not being liable if i do!

opinions please :)

You can reinstall WinME without loosing any data, but like always, backup any important stuff you have first.

love you sig line :) ok...tried to do the reinstall from cab and it won't work. says i don't have enough conventional memory. compaq siad to use my start up disk and then use dos. haven't used a start up disk (though i have and alwasy make one :) but don't recall which option to use when i do this. 1 is help, 2 is startup without cd support, 3 is with cd support and 4 is...hmm...don't recall. Geeze! i hate this! i have both a quick restore and also a recovery cd from compaq. can't i just use one of those? i wait your reply grasshopper :)

all fixed now. didn't reinstall ME. i just reinstalled the direct x that compaq had me delete. i hate compaq tech support. they always start off with the F word. since i told them i would not format, they wanted me to do the reinstall of windows whcih was not necessary. thank God i have a brain and once i get over the panic attack...it works :)
