What is the normal or best way to back up a registry file and do you do one at a time or can you back it all up at once? If there is a problem how do you load it back in?

You can use GoBack, although it will trash your HD very fast.
To backup a part of registry, you can:
1. Start>Run
2. Type Regedit
3. Select which registry u wanna backup.
4. If more than one entry highlight it.
5. Registry>Export Registry File
6. To load it back just select Import Registry File.

The registry is contained in 2 hidden files user.dat and system.dat which you can copy to another location, preferably not on your PC, if you are going to do something potentially dangerous. If you have multiple users you have to back up the user.dat for each user - these are stored in the users' personal folders. In a system with only one user you will find the files in the Windows folder. Scanreg makes backups every times Windows starts so you have about 5 backups already there, but on the system.
I use a different method. If I am going to do something potentially stupid (which I frequently do :) I clone the C drive to another hard drive using Norton Ghost (other drive copying or imaging programs are just as good). That way the entire system is still there should something go wrong. I think the investment is worth it when hard drives are not that expensive anymore.

By the way, the Microsoft way is here
