Just posted a message regarding my registry. I just restarted my computer with the command prompt. It loads all the drivers and goes through the list. At the end is says... a device file that is specified in the SYSTEM.INI file is damaged. Where can I find a program that will help me restore this file.

put your windows ME startup disk in, turn on your computer and start computer with or without cdrom support (you won't need your cdrom for this) then once it get's loaded up, type: scanreg /restore in dos and choose the last date that your computer was working correctly and that should fix the problem

Nurse,
Click on "Links" to the right of address box, in the drop down menu click on microsoft. In the Microsoft window type in the advance search box, on the left, Q140441 then search. Hope this is what you're looking for and you find it useful.

On my WinME System, I can type scanregw /restore in Start /Run

Scanreg[w] /restore restores the registry. I don't think it fixes system.ini or device files.

Just a little Info Renaissance Man. Not sure if it's accurate or true :) But, here it goes.

Open your SCANREG.INI and have a read.

Then Start>>Run...>>Type; C:\windows\sysbckup>>Press Enter>>Right click one of the .cabs and explore it.

Sorry, forgot to whom I was talking to. My face is red. whoops Anyways, you get the just of what I'm saying.

Dear noname/redface:

I read scanreg.ini. Nothing new there.

I opened one of the cabs in c:\windows\sysbckup and found win.ini and system.ini. Live and learn. I did say "I don't think it fixes system.ini or device files."

Apparently, it's more important to you to be sarcastic with me (I got the gist of what you were saying) than to point out to all of us that scanreg[w] /restore does in fact include system.ini.

But if "a device file that is specified in the SYSTEM.INI file is damaged" how does fixing SYSTEM.INI fix a damaged device file?

BTW, I know that MS instructions on scanreg /restore DO say to go to DOS. I find it easier to just go to Start/Run and type scanregw /restore. It works on my system. It may not on yours.

"Apparently, it's more important to you to be sarcastic with me (I got the gist of what you were saying) than to point out to all of us that scanreg[w] /restore does in fact include system.ini."

First, that was "just" and not "gist".

Second, where was I being "sarcastic"?

Third,
"Sorry, forgot to whom I was talking to. My face is red. whoops Anyways, you get the just of what I'm saying."

What I meant by this; My perception of you is of a keen, knowledgeable person facinated, interested with gaining more. If you read more into what I was saying. I guess nothing can be done about that. But, to say that's not what was intended. (sarcasm)

P.S. What I meant by reading scanreg.ini was if you wanted you could backup files besides what is already being backed up. Kind of like a Restore :-) lol

I'm answering noname not to get into a pissing match (am I allowed to say that?), but to illustrate how I may (or may not) have misread his/her post. It may be a lesson in how I and others can be less sensitive to reading things into posts or how noname and others can be more helpful and less misunderstood. To keep this from escalating any further, I will not post anymore on this thread.
========================================

1. There are no grammar or spelling police, but you might want to use a dictionary to look up gist and just.

2. If you didn't imply sarcasm, I'm sorry I inferred it. You seemed to be saying "I know something you don't, but I'm not gonna tell you what it is, and if you want to find out I'll give you a few clues." Regardless of intent, that doesn't seem very helpful to me or anyone else.

About the "Sorry, forgot to whom I was talking to. My face is red." You didn't forget; and it sounds like feigning respect when just the opposite is intended, as in "Oops, you're supposed to be so smart, but maybe you're not so smart after all."

3. Thanks for your clarification. I appreciate your perception. What make's this forum great is the collective wisdom of all of us, and I continue to post here because I learn at least as much as I help.

Thanks for helping me learn what's in the scanreg backups.

Yes RM I was being hypocritical Give me a break. You've been feigning us all along, right. Now, that statement would be sarcastic. I'm just giving my illustration of what I feel is sarcasm :-) I guess my memory is not as thorough as it should be. I can't remember the thousands of people I deal with on a monthly basis at a drop of the hat.

Hopefully this kind of thing wont happen again. I'm sure it probably will though. Not by intention but by misunderstanding of what was said. Wars get started that way.
No more post from here either.
You're welcome.

I'm sure the posts will dissolve away. Or maybe not :) What do you think KTTD
