Comment:

I've been getting registry errors with things like missing icon and other stuff. I tried to rectify this by running scanreg/fix in dos but when it gets to 91% rebuilding class.dat it stops with an error saying corrupt keys and tells me to reinstall or free space but running scanreg in ME reports no errors. This happens everytime. Do i have an error and is there a way to fix this without reinstalling windows?

have you tried any registry fix programs?
Registry Mechanic advertises on this site & has a free trial.

have you run all the checks for malware? AdAware or Spybot S&D might help.

good luck

How big is the Registry file. If it is too big, the DOS version can not process all of it. Yet the Windows ME version can.

You are running SCANREGW under Windows ME.
