I tried to boot up the computer, but it goes blank and a message at the top of the screen appears that says Registry File not Found.. can anyone give me a hint as to what's wrong?

You most likely had a run in with a virus/trojan/home page hijacker, and your antivirus has removed the file but not the registry entry.
Do Start > Run > MSCONFIG > Startup tab and look for a run of REGEDIT. There could be a parameter after it like SP.reg or C:\windows\Temp\{somefile}.tmp
UNselect the entry.
