Is anyone aware of a program that will remove unneeded registry keys! Is something like this nessary, when in MSCONFIG it has the cleanup button in the startup portion , that when you click on it , it says that all startup items in the registry have been verified and obsolete ones removed ? Of course a freeware program would be nice , however I dont mind spending a few bucks , for a easy to use Registry cleaner. I have Norton Utilities and it has a registry editing program . However Iam not knowledgable about whats safe to remove and whats not. When I run Norton System Check , sometimes it will come up with some registry keys that it says are incorrect, and when I click on repair it deletes the key. I keep my system as lean as I can when it comes to cleaning out old files and temps etc. The registry is the one area I leave alone , because I know doing the wrong thing there can cause alot of problems ! Thank in Advance,Nick

Regcleaner is often recommended and for good reason. It displays details of left over mess from uninstalled programs and enables you to delete it from the registry (always backup first!). From www.vtoy.fi/jv16/index.shtml

Even though Delindex has nothing to do with the registry, I'm including these notes in ver. 4.2 (available in a few weeks):

IMHO, it's as important to remove junk from your registry as it is from your hard drive. If you don't use a registry cleaner, your registry will be bigger; it will have obsolete and erroneous entries; and it's more likely to cause errors. With any cleaner, do NOT delete "duplicate" files! I use all of these cleaners, and each finds problems the others cant.
♦ EasyCleaner (free; WARNING: in WinME it WILL disable Help UNLESS you put HELP in the "skip" box; also add _RESTORE, CONTROL)
♦ MS RegClean (free; may cause problems on SOME WinME systems; not mine)
♦ Get the 2 above from http://winguides.com/downloads.php?guide=registry
♦ System Mechanic ($60; iolo.com; very good; overpriced)
♦ Norton WinDoctor in Utilities & NSW (Fix regstry errors yourself! Most Norton "solutions" are wrong; usually it's best to delete invalid entries).
♦ Remove much of your history with List Zapper (free; PCMagazine.com)
♦ See http://computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/20552.html
and http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/123201.html
♦ Fix Registry cleaning problems with the cleaner's undo function, or type scanregw /restore in Start/Run or scanreg /restore at a DOS prompt.
♦ After cleaning, keep registry (& backups) healty & small: in Start/Run, type type scanregw /fix /opt, or scanreg /fix /opt at a DOS prompt. (Win98/ME)

I think the best all around suite for keeping your system clean.....is Fixit 4.0 much smaller than Norton Utilities and just as good if not better. The registry cleaner is very through and safe to use. Works with all versions of windows including XP.

Window Washer is really not a Registry cleaner.

WinCleaner 3MB; $30 list price.
