I am still an ME user (maybe that's my biggest mistake to begin with) and I thougth I'd make myself a web site using FrontPage. I play around a bit, add some pictures, run a simulation, you know, get myself used to the software. Now the size of my web site is 1.67Mb large but the size on disk is 8.12Mb (!) which must be due to the simulations that I ran. Any hints how to get rid of this unnecessary disk utilization?

If it were me. I would just delete the files on your computer. If you want to have back ups then put the files on CD prior to deletion.
