Recovering from Recovery CD

I used the stupid recovery cd that came with my PC to try and set it back to factory settings. I though this would be a relatively simple process, but something must have went horribly wrong because now Windows Me doesn't start at all. So I've been using the startup floppy to get to MS DOS prompts, but I'm not sure what to do at this point. I don't have a Windows Me disk as it came pre-installed. All I have is the recovery cd and the startup disk. How do I use these to get my Windows Me back? I started this whole process because I wanted to clean out problems with Me prior to upgrading to XP which I haven't been able to do because when I tried to upgrade it says there is no evidence of a prior OS being present. I'm hoping there is a simple answer to this, but apparently it is too advanced for Compaq/HP as they were no help.

You may have a corrupted recovery disk - try contacting HP/Compaq support & see if they are willing to send out a full set of recovery disks (these recreate the original 'd' backup partition). This has worked in the past for my Presario 700 laptop which only had the stupid reecovery partition so I argued that I needed the recovery CDs in case the partition became corrupted - it's worth a try.
