Subject: Reboot with Adaptec Easy CD Creator |
Comment: My system (Win ME, Pentium III @ 800 mhz) tends to reboot spontaneously when using Adaptec Easy Cd Creator 4. Strangely, I get no error messages and no scandisk! It happens frequently, but not always. Does anyone recognize this, and how can it be helped? Cheers, Paz

Reply: (edit)If this is the only application which does this, I would uninstall, reinstall and then check for any updates. If that doesn't work, try a different burner program (ie Nero).

Reply: (edit)I use version 4.02c. The programs that are running would be Windows ME, Norton utilities 4 (yes, I know - not fully compatible, but really not as bad as it seems), and some resident programs like my logitech keyboard and mouse controls. What I find strange is that I don't get any error messages - which would be expected if it was just any 'unclean shutdown'... cheers, Paz

Reply: (edit)My computer does this, too. When I bring it up in the morning, as soon as it's loading direct CD, it shuts the computer completely to the "startup" screen, and goes through the dos scandisk. Then it comes up clean after doing this twice. Sometimes in the middle of the day, it reboots for no reason, also. I updated to the latest version of directcd with no good results. D

Reply: (edit)I have this problem several times with several different burning programs, and for myself anyways,i have found the problem.Back when i had 98 SE and 128mbs ram i could burn 1 entire 650mb cd with no problems on a HP 10x4x32x but then i would have to immeadetly restart becouse of resources getting to low.Now i still have my PII 350 but with 256mb ram and Windows ME.Since ME is so hungry for resources i still cant do but 1 burn without restarting,i wouldn't even try it with 128mbs and ME.However,,,,there is this little program called Mem Turbo II.It is wonderfull for keeping your resources under control.if your running low on ram, just hit ctrl, alt,m almost instantly back like a fresh restart!!!with using this program BETWEEN burns,i have burned i think about 14 full cd's without ever even needing to do a restart. If your OS in in real good working order, when your resources get to low it will attemp to restart itself, but for alot of people who bring there resources down fast enough, this just results in a crash or mostly a lock up.Just don't try to burn a cd with Mem Turbo running in the tray, you will have buffer underruns.Defragging your hard drive before a burn will help tremendlessly. It is almost crucial to faster burners now You can find this program at http://www.memturbo.com/ it is shareware, but with the full version, you even have control over your swap file.
