Hi all. Having an annoying time with my start menu. It is a mess and I'd like it in alphabetical order please.

I posted this originally on the win98 forum (http://computing.net/windows95/wwwboard/forum/116401.html) with no luck, someone suggested I try here.

Win 98se/IE6.0.26/no active desktop.

This is really bugging the hell outta me. I've now tried allsorts to sort the program menu into alphabetical order. I've been to the registry and deleted all 'order' values from HKEY/curruser/software/Msoft/Win/currver/menuorder/(start menu, &progs, documents, faves, etc)rebooted, favorites order value has returned as is menu order value, but program menu order remains deleted. Start/ProgMenu order still a mess.

Also tried windows key + P then application key + B, that didn't work either.

But, if I open internet explorer I can go to the favourites menu at the very top of the browser, right click in there, and sort by name. My favourites folder gets reorganised fine, but my progs list is still a mess.

I have no right click option in the start menu (it works fine everywhere else) nor can I drag and drop in the start menu.
The prog files are in order in C/Windows/startmenu/folder, though moving them around in there doesn't have any effect on the start menu anyhow.

This has been niggling me for months now, espescially as I can hit the re-sort button on the laptop with Me installed! If anyone has any other suggestions I could try I would appreciate it.

Many thanx as always.
nick.

You sure you can't right-click after scrolling over to the programs menu? I just tried, with no problem. You said you have no right-click option in the Start Menu, but I was a lil' unclear if you actually tried in the Programs menu....

Try this:

Open C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs and goto Tools/ Folder Options/ Restore Defaults

Right Click on a blank space in the folder and Arrange icons,By Name, Auto Arange, Refresh

Hope it works or empty out the folder and create a new one. Go to Programs folder and create short cuts in the new folder for all your programs. Insert this new folder to Start Menu. [you can also have a folder shortcut on bottom task bar or the desktop]

Good luck

this is not working guys.
If I follow your next tip Rajan, this is what happens (I've tried several versions pf this all with the same result)
click under start..go to properties..brings up taskbar properties box...no re sort button...I can then go to start menu programmes tab...still no re sort button..click advanced and it brings up the C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu folder...no re sort button. I can arrange the files in the folder till the cows come home but it doesn't re sort the prog list in start>progs>

Thanx for all the efforts so far, it seems my 'simple' problem doesn't just have me beat.

Any more ideas?
thanx again.
nick.
