Comment:

I recently found and performed a patch on my Windows ME OS in order
to reacquire real DOS ability within Windows ME. I would like to have
the ability to reverse the change and supposedly it should have been
easy to do, but thus far, I've been unsuccessful. The patch procedure
was basically as follows:
-Create 2 folders on the C: drive called Temp and DOS Storage
-Download a file Real_DOS.zip, unzip the file and place incl files in
Temp folder
-Copy original Win ME files Windows\command.com,
Windows\Command\EBD\io.sys, and Windows\System\regenv32.exe into both
Temp and DOS Storage folders
-Make sure R, H, and S attributes are removed from files in Temp
folder
-Execute WinMEDOS.exe in Temp folder(was file incl in Real_DOS.zip)
to patch io.sys, command.com, and regenv32.exe within Temp folder
-Copy newly "patched" files as follows: io.sys to C:\, command.com to
both C:\ and C:\Windows, and regenv32.exe to C:\Windows\System
-Copy new autoexec.bat and config.sys(incl within Real_DOS.zip)to C:\
-Reboot and presto....... you now have unhidden real-mode DOS in
Windows ME

I guess I'm just uncomfortable not being able to go back to my
original setup, so I decided to try it. The procedure stated it could
easily be done since I had saved a copy of the "original" files
io.sys, command.com, and regenv32.exe in the folder DOS Storage. All
I supposedly had to do was copy the original files from DOS Storage
back to their original directories and remove the new autoexec.bat
and config.sys from the root C:\. So I copied the original files from
DOS Storage as follows: original io.sys to C:\, original command.com
to C:\ and C:\Windows, and original regenv32.exe to
C:\Windows\system. I also copied my original autoexec.bat and
config.sys to C:\. However, when I rebooted, I received the error
message: "Invalid system disk.. replace the disk, and then press any
key". At this point all I could do was boot using my Win ME boot disk
and copy the patched files back per procedure. This allowed me to
boot into Windows again. This patch procedure was advertised to be
reversible (using the save originals to DOS Storage folder step), but
I can't seem to get it to reverse. I guess I'm looking for ideas or
for someone to tell me what I might be doing wrong during the patch
reversal attempt. Thanks.

when you get the invalid disk error,
bootup with a regualr win-me startup disk, and at the a:
type sys c:
and hit enter,
it should respond; system transferred
then take out floppy and reboot.

www,
I tried your suggestion and it worked like a charm! I was a little scared to try the SYS command, but I figured I could probably return to the DOS patch deal if it hadn't worked out. Thank you very much for your assistance.
