jackie7585, The focus of attention may be given to your present existing files or programs as they can be corrupted. There are numerous causes of "failure to shut down" to the point whereas it's next to impossible to explain here in such limited space. Therefore in the following I've provided 2 places to go towards help with resolving the shutdown problem. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=273746 (Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 273746) At above site I would personally start with step #4 to see if you may have a damaged exit sound file as that is a common cause of shutdown failure as well as others. The other place you may go to receive help is by clicking START, click HELP, In SEARCH (upper right corner of screen) type "shutdown problems" and click "Go". On left side of screen click on "startup & shutdown troubleshooter". In the scroll down window select "my computer stops responding when I try to shut down windows" and then click NEXT. Now you should be at the "Is a program in the startup folder causing the problem?" window - Click "to determine whether a program in the startup folder is causing the problem" and then follow directions given. To sum up everything as mentioned above, I would first perform "step 4" at the Microsoft support site and if that didn't solve the problem I would immediately go to the other site of which I've explained to find out if a program in the "startup" folder is causing the problem. I hope this may be of help and good luck.

jackie7585, FWIW, I experienced the same problem. My 'quick & dirty' solution was a freebie shutdown proggie called "Slawdog". Advertised to work with all versions of Windows. If you would like to give it a whirl, you can get it at: http://www.slawdog.com/products/smartsd/ HTH. Ed in Texas.
