re windows updates

KB828026(for windows media player) this update continually shows up as needing to be installed but............. it is listed in my list of successful downloads didn't find this specific problem in any past problems on CN

It is a common problem. No one from Microsoft has bothered to explain or fix why their program keeps thinking its has not been installed. Only happens on some machines.
They want to to up get rid of that older version and get the one with Digital Rights Management built in that prevents playing of copied music.

Err..I'm taking a bit of a chance - I'm a W98 helper just browsing around.
On W98SE there is a file called qfecheck.exe that gives a lot of info on the state of updates (including invalid files if any). It might be that somehow you have some old version files around.
Try typing qfecheck.exe in the Run box, it probably works on ME but not so sure about XP. If the file isn't there it will obviously do nothing.

ok tried that came up with a list of updates/all ok none faulty or not installed correctly etc no errors/ also found 3 files in the update tab again all ok

microsoft support finally replied suggested I re-install the update in safe mode did that/ updates still not recognised support have now handed this problem over to a update technician
