I have a Pentium III Windows ME Dell bought in late 2000. This is our second computer now as we have a new computer now (Dell, Windows XP, bought in August of 05).
The last few months I have had increased problems with the Windows ME screen freezing, and just the past few weeks have had a new problem. The machine when booted will often turn on with the green light showing the tower is on, but the monitor and keyboard will not turn on. Other times randomly it will boot completely normally, and yet other times it will boot all the way to the sign in screen and then freeze. i have also twice today had it boot to the DELL.COM screen (first screen you see) and just stay there. The last time it booted normally was yesterday, once, ironically when I needed to get on dial up because our DSL was down, and miraculously it worked long enough for me to send the email I needed to send, and then it crashed.
I have been trying to move things through the network to back up on this computer in case it totally goes, but haven't been able to get it to boot enough times to finish the task. I have run Adaware, Spybot, and AVG Anti-Virus repeatedly and in a timely manner over the last several years.
I'm wondering if there's anything else I can do - besides maybe running a defrag again and taking off all unnecessary startup files - if I can get it to boot long enough to do so. I'm just wondering what the problem is.
We recently moved and I had had the computers networked together upstairs and downstairs through an HPNA cord. When it increasingly acted up I removed it from that system and brought it upstairs to be side by side with an ethernet cord. But that doesn't seem to be any difference - it acts the same - very tempemental and unreliable.
Thank you for any assistance - let me know if you need any more information.
Sorry, I can't get it to boot during 3-4 tries while typing this, so can't provide the CPU/Ram information. It's a Dell Dimension L800r

Why don't you run the Dell diagnostics and tell us what you learn? If you don't have the resource CD with your system, you can download from the Dell site for free. You need to rule out hardware issues first.
