My Dell 8100 series Pent 4 with windows ME has a random reboot, it normally
happens when I'm on the internet but occasionally happens when using other
programs.
The computer will just shut down and restart with no prior warning. Sometimes it
dosen't occur for a week then at times everyday, I've spoken to others using
windows ME that have had the same situation but no one has a fix. Spoke to a
Senior tech at Earthlink that knows of the problem and it's related to windows ME
but no one can give me a solution. Though he's attempting the find answers as
this problem has been presented to him before.
Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks,
Rick

Rick,

I've had the exact same problems with ME.

I've turned off my Norton Antivirus automatic updates (goes to the Web and gets new Norton stuff). I update manually now. I have absolutly pin pointed some of the restart problems to that and turning that off has stopped some of the unexplained reboots. The scheduler time for the updates was set to not start until little or no computer activity was detected for so many minutes, thus the variablity.

The only problem I have left, that has occured since I turned off this Norton Antivirus update feature, is when composing e-mail in Hotmail.

In my Windows 95 days composing in Hotmail would sometime cause a complete lockup without warning(manual power on and off to reboot).

I've not had more than a few days pass since I've zereod in on this stuff so more time will be needed for varification.

Please write back on this board what you find too. This shutdown thing is a real time waster (expecially when your work goes with it).

Tim

Thanks for the tips everyone, so far I've turned of the hybernation setting, as well as changed some items in the windows setup/communication area. These changes have cut down on the reboots but they still remain. And yes it's becomes very annoying to just loose your work suddenly.

Thanks,
Rick

I had a problem with that awhile back. Kept restarting for no reason...I did a scan disk and found an error on the drive and repaired it....Then it never happened again....Not sure if that helps but good luck
